View Full Version : Double Din install in an OBS

So i have been wanting to do a double din install in my truck for the last couple weeks finally got the double din its a kenwood ddx516 and i started and finished the install today thought i would do a little write up on it as i have seen some pics of installs and some small writeups on how they were done so i took some pics along the way today and thought i might do a little write up.
first thing i like to do is tear apart the dash and do a test fit on the double din to see how it clears best mine had the best clearences when positioned to the passenger side of the dash as it gave a path for wires to be tucked in and what not, after i figured out where the best clearences were i placed the dash bezel back over top of the double din in the dash with tape placed around the bezel so i could mark off where i needed to cut and trim the dash to clear the headunit, after i got it all marked off using a cardboard cutout of the dimenssions of the double din which i pictured, after everything was drawn onto the tape i used a dremel with cutoff wheel to cut the trim on the bezel, after i had everything cut back and cleaned up a bit i did a quick test fit to ensure everything cleared properly, after that i used the pieces of plastic that i had cut out of the bezel to frame in the sides of the dash i used hot glue on the backside of the dash to temporarly hold them in place and then used another piece of the plastic that i wasnt going to use along with a soldering iron to fuse the added pieces to the existing bezel to reinforce it. after that i used a cardboard cutout of the hole that needed to be filled in and glued the cutout in place with hot glue, normally i would have fiberglassed this part but the opening wasnt large enough for me to justify getting all of that out and making a mess. after that setup i body filled both sides and sanded it smooth and then masked off the grey areas of the dash and painted the other areas of it, i plan to repaint the area i painted today but started running low on time so i just put a quick coat of filler primer on it and called it a day, let me know what you guys think and if you have any questions.

the pics from when its done arent the best due to the low light and the camera glaring whenever i took pics i had to turn the flash down so quality isnt the best i will try to take some better pics tomorrow.

The header means the Double Din unit.
The OEM Delco Radio/CD has a plastic tab on each side, which contacts rail on dashboard radio bay.
what do you mean by header?

i was going to make a metal bracket for the headunit but when i went to test fit the dash over the headunit in the dash it was a very tight fit and didnt require me to fab anything up it just sits in there right now and i can try to move it but it doesnt move at all, the brackets i was going to make would have bolted to the side of the headunit in the stock mounting holes and then have them secure to the hard plastic brackets that were connected to the rails, hope that helps

Definitely doing this to my truck..SOON! great job man!
One question though...you have it off centered. Could you have placed it more where it would it be centered with the hvac controls?? Just asking!

oh yeah there was plenty of clearance for it, i just did it over there so it was farther from the shift lever and makes it easier to use and see in my opinion.

ok..good deal. Again, job well done! The main reason i like it is because you were able to keep the hvac controls in the factory location.

The thedetailss.com makes a good kit to put a double din in a obs. but with this kit you do have to move ur hvac controls down to where the cd player was. so there will be some cutting involved. Im wanting to do this to my truck bad!!! the kit is $164 but i was told that if ur a fsc member he will give you a deal.

I've seen it, but it also involves cutting away some of the interior of the dash where the double din would fit. Plus moving the hvac control and drilling holes in it. It's a nice kit but I think it's a bit to much to do to install a double din. What jcorkin has done here seems alot simpler, less work and in my opinion it still looks just as good.

thanks THOMPSON22, it was a very easy install only took about 3 hours and that was due to having to wait for stuff to setup and dry wasnt bad at all. plus i like having the storage pocket under the hvac controls personally.

Hey jcorkin I did my double din install today. It's a Pioneer Carrozzeria from Japan. This thing has alot of power and features. Now I just gotta fill in the gaps on each side and repaint the area. I centered mine as you have yours more to the right. It was an easy job, it took me about and hour and a half just to do this much. Again, thanks for posting how you did yours.

thats looking good, you will probably have about another 2 hours into for filling in the sides and about another hour for the painting portion of it. thats a pretty nice looking headunit you got there too you got any better pics of it? and im glad someone could find this thread useful, i like having mine off centered to the right it makes it more visible in my opinion plus i think they look a bit better off centered like that

I used my camera phone when I took this pic. I'll try and get a better one tomorrow with my camera. I now see why you have yours off centered. The shift handle is in the way while driving even though I have a remote. I may leave it but then again I may go to a salvage yard and get another dash bezel and move it more to the right.

Here are some pics of my install. Did it during very cold weather, so it took some time for the hardners to set up in the fiber fill and bondo. I used a cheap Chinese unit that I have purchased from ebay very cheap, and it has far exceeded my expectations. Anyone interested in the unit can look here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-DVD-GPS-NAVIGATION-CAR-STEREO-TOUCH-SCREEN-DOUBLE-DIN-/270635787819?pt=Car_Audio_In_Dash_Receivers&hash=item3f0326662b#ht_8698wt_1189
Thanks for all the help guys, I am extremely happy with how this install turned out. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, or post on here.

I build custom boxes and False floors for about 15 yrs. I am a perfectionist which should be a disability. when i do mine it will prob have 5 hours into just the dash. it has to look factory. I was told cant be done with 96 bucket. had to get 99 bucket. but you guys are not changing everything and fits flush. that was my worry. I like the installs you guys have done. guess itd
s time to get out the tools and get some abs plastic. i see allot of plastic welding in my future.
jcorkin
01-13-2012, 11:36 PM
i did the wifes 96 tahoe a couple of months ago and used all abs plastic in the molding part of it, no body filler needed, turned out pretty nice and no painting, but its a true double din, meaning no visible disc insert as the disc slot is behind the face, its a pioneer avic-d2, the problem when using one of these is that the mounting depth is deeper on these then the ones that you can see the disc slot on, ie non motorized face. you really have to push good and hard to get them to fit flush into the dash, so for future reference of anybody installing a double din it is much easier to use the double dins like i used in the beginning of this post vise the full faced double dins, you can use a full faced double din it is just a much much tighter fit, just my .02 on it.

This is encouraging. Half of my button lights are out. Figured I put in a double din.
Where did you guys put the satellite and GPS antennas?
I see 6.2" and 7" which ones are you guys using?
sound227
01-14-2012, 01:05 PM
I fished the wire for my GPS antenna through the defrost vent in the middle of the dash. It literally brings the wire right to the back of the unit. Double side tape holds the antenna to the dash.
I used a 6.2". It is a cheap chinese knockoff, but has everything I could want in a unit, and was very affordable. Link for it is on page 2, ships from China, however, I ordered it on a Friday night, and I had it Monday afternoon. Haven't had a single issue with it. I also have a reverse camera hooked up to it.
Good luck if you decide to do it!!!

i routed my gps antenna under the dash and over to the driver side and mounted it behind the driver side pillar cover, its never seen and it works perfectly from there. i have a 6.2" one and a 7" one, the 6.2" is easier to install and looks better in the end i believe plus they are usually cheaper.

Correct... I thought about adding a radio through the back of the head unit, and mounting it in overhead console, but I have been using pandora so much lately I decided against it. I drilled a hole in my pocket below the HVAC controls and have my stereo/ipod wire in there to hook up to.

Block it off, or look for a bucket. I was also thinking that's where I can mount (in the future) the XM controls.

I was hoping they made an OBS dash that had a Double-Din opening, but apparently they don't. So, I guess I am going to have to give this a try as well.

My '98 Silverado is still running strong, and I'm contemplating a double-din head unit. Thanks for pics and tips.
If I wanted to install a double-din and was NOT concerned about the side gaps - would that make the process fairly quick and easy?
Thanks, Dave in RI (where we're about to be nailed with a monstrous blizzzzzard) :wtf:
