I was hoping someone out there may have heard of this being done before.
I currently have an 87 GMC 2500 4x4 with a 6.2, I've gottin exellent service out of it but unfortunlntly the boby is pretty much shot.
I can buy a 96 dully but it is a 454 gas with an auto trans this is not a powertrain I am interested in but it's a good price for the truck and I would be intrested in putting the 8.2 in it if it is possible.
I already have a rebuilt 8.2 with a 6 speed std out of a ford 700 does anyone know if there is a kit to adapt the trans to np205 transfer case.
I,m not worried about motor mounts or trans mounts, drive shafts or wiring

If adapting the transfer case is the only issue, it would help if we knew what transmission you have, then we would be able to properly inform you.

I want to use a 6 speed spicer out of an 85 ford 700 , and I would rather not get a divorced transfer case if at all possible

I have two of them already bolted to rebuilt motors one is a CM-5052-A with a trans prake brake on the back and the other is CM-5852-A with no brake. They both have mechanical clutch linkages

Sorry Rob. I can`t find any info on transfer cases being bolted to that trans. Is the tailhousing removable, and could you get a picture of it? A DANA/Spicer transfer case may work.

Yes the end caps are removeable from both units but one tail shaft is about 3 inches long and the other is abouit 5 inches. As for a picture I don't have a way of getting it on the net but I will keep trying.

P.S. Thanks for the help.

We've got an 8.2l detroit in one of our grain trucks. While ours works fine other than burning quite a bit of oil, but I have heard nothing but bad things from everyone else who owns one. I does sound pretty awesome with my custom straight pipe though.

What does the 8.2 and six speed weigh?

We have been using the 8.2 in a ramp truck for hauling cars for ten years never had a problem with it they are awesome on fuel and make tonnes of power.
Ford has been putting them in school busses for about 20 years now and GM even uses them in some of the older 5 tonnes.

As for it's weight I'm told that it's between 8 and 12 hundred pounds but I think less

I heard bad things about them, but only because of the difficulty of swap versus the reward. Not to say the motor is a bad motor, i'm a big detroit diesel fan, it's just what i heard.

Otherwise, i say go for it :rocking:

Whereabouts in NS are you? I lived in Hali for a year, one of the best times of my life. I was driving a modded Civic at the time though, wish i had my K5 when i was out there.

That would be an interesting swap.

But the 8.2 is a hit or miss, but its more on how you care for it and the age of the 8.2. We swapped out two 305's to two 8.2s Turbo charged in our 33ft Chris Craft cabin cruiser. The power is awesome and fuel effeciency is nice, but we've also done a major over haul on both to get them as upgraded as possible, blew one motor one year which lead to the major over haul. They have been super reliable besides a couple injectors now and then since overhaul.

But knowing the size of the 8.2 a body lift may be required, like I said maybe being the key word.

May be the same amount of lift that is required for a Duramax/Allison conversion....I think 2".

i can relate a little info about gm's 8.2. it is a four stroke engine designed to compete directly with cat's 3208 diesel. does anyone remember what the top of the chevy vega engine block looked like? the top of the block was open, you could see down into the water jackets around the cylinders. the 8.2 is made the same way. that's why they had such a hard time sealing the head gaskets. also like the cat engine they don't come with replacable liners. neither engine takes to cyl overbore. the only way to repair them correctly is to bore the cyl out, press a dry sleeve in then bore back to std. the 8.2 had a bunch of different "std" size pistons as they were finiky about cyl wall to piston clearence. they had the same unit style injector & gov as the two stroke engines, although inj timing was set a little different. like already posted, they were a hit or miss engine, just don't run them hot!

Back when I was in school the 8.2s were much newer and I rode in many Thomas built school buses going to football games, track meets and the like. The Big Block gas buses would run away and hide from those weak running 8.2 Detroits.
