Check out ls1tech.com, they have a whole conversions/hybrids section that can answer anything you need. I've owned an LT1, and currently have a 5.3 and a 5.7 LS1. LT1s can be bought cheap, but are kinda like the redheaded stepchild of the sbc world. They're hard to work on, the optispark goes out frequently, but can make decent power. The 6.0 is a little more pricey due to it being the BIG LS based engine that everyone wants for their vette/camaro/firebird. I've heard that you can get a 5.3 for next to nothing, the 5.7 stuff will switch over, and be within 10-20 hp of a 6.0. I looked at doing this on a 67 Camaro before reality set in and I realized I couldn't afford to restore a car. I'd go rebuilt 5.3....

LT1's as mentioned are absolutely nothing special. They still suffer from normal small block Gen 1 problems not to mention their own. And realistically strength wise, they are just a 2 bolt 350 block unless it's from a Vette. You want some rpm out of it for any amount of time, forget it. They come apart in the bottom end like any other Gen 1 will.
LS is the way to go and are cheap as dirt. I would search out an LQ4 really over any 5.3. The 4" bore is just a better all around setup. LQ4's are worthless up here based upon sheer volume, much like 5.3's. Mind you I live in a world dominated by company fleet trucks making 6.0's abundant.
Either way I would grab an LS over any Gen 1 or 2.

Neither.
Slap a stroked Mark IV rat in your truck and call it a day.
