Hi there, I am in dire straights and need someones wisdom.. I want to know what will happen if I put a 2500 lb. Camper on my sons 2008 silveraldo...On the inside of the door it says combined wt of occupants and cargo should not exceed 1494 lbs.
The truck has full size rear seats ( like some people I know) it has a 6 ft bed but the camper is 8 ft. The boy/man child is homeless in Juneau and he will have to leave this on the truck driving around for awhile. So you can see my concern! Is there some way to have his truck beefed up? Will this break the axle or something horrible? The truck is not paid for yet, and I want him to be safe.. Please advise. Thanks!! Ps I will be putting the truck on the ferry to Juneau Sat. 5/7/11...

If you are really worried, i'd order some helper springs or something for the rear (even timbren blocks, which are load bearing bump stops). I know that my parents 09 Sierra 1500 (ECSB Z71) was able to tow around quite a bit of weight without issue, but we never put much weight in the back of it though.

Your not going to break anything, just might cause some premature wear on things like tires, shocks, and springs. As Koots said look inot Timbrens (cheaper) or maybe even airbags. Airbags might be a good option if he plans on keeping the truck for while and towing/hauling with it.

Is this truck a 1500 or 2500HD?

it has a 6 ft bed but the camper is 8 ft.
This is the only part thta concerns me. That's a lot of overhang, so it camper won't be centered over the axle.

Exactly,
a 2500HD might be able to handle it due to a decent rear GAWR but a 1500 will likely be overloaded.
Also, if it is a 1500 with four fullsize doors and a short bed, the box is likely only the 5'8" box which is already at a disadvantage due to the fact that the axle is located pretty far forward in the bed. This combined with the fact that the camper will be hanging a couple feet off the back of the bed leads me to believe that the truck will not be safe with this combo.

So it is a CCSB GMT900. I'm betting the bed is actually only 5'8".
Door sticker says ~1500lbs crew and cargo. So that assumes the weight will be distributed across the truck, with some bias to the rear.
Now, the bulk of a slide in camper's weight are toward the rear...
So were are 1000lbs over, with no crew (people) yet, and a 8ft camper in a 5'8" bed creating super leverage due to the weight being so far beyond the axle.
Rear axle with be on the bumpstops, hard, UCAs will be on the droop stops, hard, and the headlights will be lighting the treetops.
Dangerous and dumb.
Would you haul a cubic yard of gravel in the bed? Hell... that would even be safer than this.

Would not recomend this. Not only is the rear axle overloaded as well as bearings and axles on a semi floating rear, but the front is going to be super light.

Yeah I wouldnt do it. Not as much the weight issue but all that weight hanging ouff the bed is not going to be good. Sell the camper and send him to igloo building school............jk.
I'd look into this:

Homeless and still has a 2008 chevy with a payment? Sell the truck, get some cheap tranportation and a decent place to live. I realize times are tuff, but a truck payment with no home?
And about the idea................it is very bad. Way to much weight for the 1/2 ton axle and all in the wrong spot........way behind the rear axle. Damage to the truck will be the result and possible injury to him or someone else because of unsafe truck.
