im helping my friend buy a new used car and i was wondering if you guys could give me some tips on what to look for on a used car to see if its worth the money. thanks

Look up book values on KBB as a starting point. Through checkout of the car. Your favorite mechanic is also a good pair of eyes (and ears). Take it for a good test drive in all sorts of driving, including highway.

budget? That would help, are we talking $20,000 or $2000?

around 3000, its just a gas saver thats all. but i meant like the things to check for to see if it hasnt been dogged or anything

You could pick up a decent Saturn or Neon for that. Check for normal stuff, strange noises, check the oil, antifreeze, steering is tight, brakes work correct, doesn't pull to one side, check the tires for normal wear, etc.
