Is there a way to bolt on a d-ring loop to my tow bar so I can keep my ball mount installed?

I dont know about bolt but a good metal shop can weld ya one on there.
Tow bar or hitch? If you mean hitch, and dont want to take the ball out for whatever reason, Id build a bumper with shackles on it.

U-bolted to the outer ends of the bar, much like Jeeps have them bolted directly to thier bumper.

Decide what you want to hook it to
Tow BAR

Or a tow HITCH

They would be for recovery purposes. Like this, only bolted somehow to the tow bar.

So your mounting to one of these?
So your mounting to one of these?
Im assuming so since he wont actually clearly explain what it is. Regardless, bolting them on sounds like a bad idea to me. Weld some tabs somewhere for shackles.

if you insist on doing it with bolt instead of getting it welded on properly you could buy one of these and make it work for you, I wouldn't pull you out by it though.

Those are what I'm thinking of but I wanted to bolt them to the hitch, I wouldn't trust the bumper strength. I was just looking at my hitch and noticed it is too far in under the bumper. I'm going to have to use the type that fits in the receiver.

So would this do the job? There's not much info about it.

You could always go to a fab shop and tell them what you want and they can fab you something.

I would not weld or bolt anything of any sort to a hitch or tow bar.
Reason being the welds can make the surrounding metal brittle and more prone to break. Which will reduce your hitch strength. All around not a good idea.
Get a good hitch and a draw bar with a shackle on it.

One of these most likely.

I am still confused , Tow bar is the triangle thing on the front of the vehicel you use to flat tow it with, Why are we trying to add rings to it?
I hope I am reading this wrong.

he meant receiver
ive used one of those for a while, its nice to have the strap already hooked up and you can throw it in the bed and not have to reach into the water or mud to hook something up

Yea, he means the hitch. I wouldnt weld to the hitch.
I just use a ball mount with a shackle in place of the ball.

Harbor Freight has a D-Ring reciever hitch and it is under 15 bucks. Plus they even have 20% off coupons regularly.

Not sure I would trust one from Harbor Freight for anything more that vanity.

If it's the one I saw there last weekend it is welded together. I would rather have a single casting or forging with a d-ring through it.

It's the d-ring shackle that I'm looking for but I originally wanted to have one on each end of the hitch. I'll most likely just get one that will fit in the receiver but I don't want a cheap one as I plan on using it for pulling me out if I get stuck in deep sand or something.

I just put a large screw pic shacke thru a spare stinger. Shackle is rated at 10K. have my 30k strap routed thru it for pulling people out.
kcb37
05-22-2011, 08:24 PM
I think a spare draw bar/ hitch/ reciever whatever you want to call it witha shackle will work just fine.
Only thing is keep in mind your only going to be rated for your lowest weight rating. Meaning your stock hitch on a 1500 is rated at 5,000 pounds, a 2500 at 7,500 pounds. Not sure about a 1500HD.
But either way your weakest point is going to be your weight rating. So keep that in mind.

thats a ball mount, but the cheap ones are only rated maybe 3 or 4k, by the time you get the clevis and hitch you might as well get a good one this is what i use rated for 9500 and like 40 from tractor supply.

Yes, that's what I'm looking for right there. Is it solid steel as opposed to the hollow one I posted earlier?

Stinger=draw bar. Different term, same meaning. Sorry.
ToyHauler

not sure if its solid but its pretty heavy
kcb37
05-24-2011, 07:51 PM
How heavy are you looking for?
I have several that are rated at 6k and hollow, I have one that is solid rated for 12k.
Just gets more expensive the heavier they get.
Don't get me wrong your better with to heavy in this case, but you can also figure if your pulling a truck out it should be full weight. Unless it's buried (say in a field on a farm) or your off roading.
For the average person even to pull a 1 ton dually a 6k would be fine. (meaning just off in the grass no traction, ect..) Also what are you looking at pulling out and where?

well, if you get stuck in mud, it might take as much as twice the wieght of your truck to get it out, so.......
kcb37
05-26-2011, 05:48 PM
Yes but he's also 2wd so unless he is off roading he probably dosen't need anything real heavy. But figuring it's a HD going to be heavier then the average 1/2 ton, and figure maybe a load in the bed. 10k at most should do you fine.

I gotta find a pic of the hook I use. Got it at Tractor Supply. Call it the meat hook. It's a huge hook that goes right into the 2" receiver..

The install is covered on Detour's web page. http://detoursusa.com/c3r_install.php The write up is picture on an XJ but the install is universal. Looks like the OP indexed them 90 degrees to clear the bumper.

You are correct sir. I didn't want them too close to the bumper, also I removed the hitch to do the drilling and I'm glad I did it that way, it would've been way more of a PITA than it already was.

honestly...if you were stuck, i would not want to pull on those
i would rather put a hitch into the reciever and put a shackle/dring/clevis/whatever you wanna call it
even just a regular ball mount w/o the ball on it would work or get a solid bar made for pulling people out
i personally dont like how they are mounted towards the ground...if you pull in any kind upward direction that puts alot of stress on the mounting point and where it t's at
that just my opinion

i was thinkin the same thing. straight pull from the reciever would be my choice. Dont think i would drill my hitch on yjr main tube either, i use it as a hitch often, To each his own tho.
