The stock 6.5 diesel converter has done well for the last few years but I feel a need to change it out for something better. A guy at work has a SC 3000 in his 80E behind a turbo'd 6 liter and loves it and even pulls his boat with it. I'm just not sure 3000 will be enough and most likely at my power level it won't stall quite to 3000 anyway. I'm only in the neighborhood of 400 but with a strong torque curve really from 2500+. I'm seriously considering the yank pro truck 3600 which is a 258mm 3200 stall rated 2.5 str converter. Its got the highest STR of any in their street/strip line up. I'm told the part throttle drivability is similar to a stock converter but when you hammer it all hell breaks loose. I'm pretty certain this converter would cause some massive traction issues but it would be a lot of fun to drive. I'm having a hard time convincing myself its worth the 945 dollars though. It would be going into a 140k mile transmission which by all rights should be gone through and beefed up a little just to be safe. Opinions?

I would ensure the transmission is more then ready for it before coughing up a grand.

Kind of what I'm thinking. Going through it could cost anywhere from free to whatever clutches or hard parts I may need to buy. I have new stock clutches available at my disposal. Maybe upgrade the sprag and a couple other minor things and thats really about it on a 80E.

that 80E should take the beating. i say go for it. she should really move out if it can hook. for a truck i dont like anymore than a 3000 stall, but ive heard good things about yank converters so i would be tempted to try one

What gets me is they call it a SST 3600 yet state the stall speed is 3200. I may have to call them and see what that is all about. 3200 would be borderline overkill but thats right where I like to do stuff. Last night I had some serious thought on converting to 4wd. I don't want to put a $950 dollar converter in without going through the trans and it turns out the 80E 4wd output shaft is readily available and cheap so I'm thinking it might just have to happen all at once. Converter, freshened up transmission, transfer case, new big one piece steel drive shaft and a 14 bolt 6 lug SF for round one. Round two would be converting to a coil over SFA. Thats a lot of money though.
