Hey guys! I have a 98 Silverado with a 5.7 in it. It has spun a bearing or bent a rod.. but either way I need a new engine. My father has found me an engine for 250 dollars but it is out of an early 2000's Chevy 3500 series commercial van. I am wondering if this will fit or not and if there are any different internals (such as a milder cam, different heads, lower compression, less horsepower, etc).

Thank You!
Colton W.

any chance you know what motor is it? for example lq4 or anything? from a quick search it looks like they ran everything from a 4.3 to a 8.1 in those vans..

All I know is that it is a 5.7 350.

A 3500 G-van with a 350 should be an vortec HD motor. Only real difference between your motor and that one is the van motor has 4 bolt mains and yours has 2 bolt mains.

Oh cool! Thanks!
So will there be any noticable power incease/decrease?

Thanks again!!

shouldn't any difference at all. It will have better potential being a 4 bolt motor.

The cam grinds might be more favorable in the 1ton GVan engine, see what tranmssion is in the Gvan. If it's a 4L60E grab the torque converter too, it would have a slightly looser stall.

hell, if it has the 4l80e, grab the whole trans, save it for a future swap, or sell it too

What tranny do I have in my truck? It's a 98 K2500 w/ the 5.7... and what are the afvantages of having a looser TC?

if it is an auto, you should have the 4L80e

Go here and put your VIN in the box. It will give you all of your RPO codes and define them for you as well. This will tell you what brake system you have (needed at the parts counter) and the trans that you have as well.

you could also use this on the van as well so you know what you are getting.

The looser TC will allow for better towing/hauling. It will hook up later and allow your engine to put more of it's torque to the trans earlier than with out. A lower stall (tigher) TC could cause the engine to bog down before it gets into it's torque curve.

Would the looser torque converter offer more starting torque/get up and go/plant your head back in the seat any more than the stocker? Or will it tame it out?

That's a very neat site! Thank you for sharing! According to the site I do, infact have a 4L80E tranny.

Yes the looser TC will allow the engine to be up on power more before it engauges the trans. This will assist towing and low end torque.
Each TC has a stall rating, that stall rating is basicly the RPM range where it will start applying torque to the trans from a stop. Most standard converters have about a 1200 stall. Performance stalls will usually start about 2000RPM and go up to about 3600RPM. Also the cam you use could require a certain stall range to keep you from bogging down the engine.
