hey guys my buddy has an 02 dmax 25oo. it will not start without some type of added fuel ie starting luid or dw40. once its running runs fine, could there be air in the system from changing a fuel filter? once it starts it runs and drives great, shut if of for an hour no go. we had it looked at the guy seems to say inkectors and that the pump is ok. what is your input

if it runs fine after the starting fluid is gone then there isnt any air in the system keeping it from starting initally. check the glowplugs and controller. also starting fluid can adhere to the glowplugs causing it to not heat up even more bascially making the engine "addicted" to starting fluid.

If your friend values his truck, never use starting fluid on it. I've got an '03 duramax sitting outside at work (dealer) waiting for an engine because the owner used starting fluid on it. The starting fluid collects in the bottom of the CAC, then when the engine finally kicks, it gets a super charge of fuel and BOOM.

try the pump on the fuel filter housing and pump the s**t out of it. crack the bleeder see if you get any air. just a thought. good luck.

Its likely that your fuel filter housing is cracked. The fuel system will lose prime when that happens.

hey guys thanks for all the input ill be seeing him this week, so you think a leaky injector could cause this to happen also? i dont think its air unless there is a fuel leak on the pressure side. how often do the injectora go in the early d max

Its common, they are near guaranteed to fail

A crack in the lines can cause it to suck in air too, not always just leak it out.

My guess is it's losing fuel pressure/prime while it sits.

so i gotta chance to look at this truck finaly. the truck started up cold with no issues today, and ran perfect adn drove good. good power smooth idle but the primer was soft. there is no leaking filter or housing or lines on top or under neath the truck he was on his way home so we didnt shut it off hes dropping it off tomorrow. im going to watch the live data fuel pressure when it shuts off and see how fast it bleeds off. i think it bleeds off fast because if he lets it sit for two minues it starts ten it wont. cold start is iffy

maybe fuel filter housing is cracked causing loss of prime. semi-common issue.

It sounds like you're losing prime in your fuel system. I'd start checking for leaks, you may need to pressurize your tank to find it.
