So i failed emissions....

Hello everyone.

I brought my 77 camperspecial down to emissions yesterday and failed,:nutkick: :puke: I guess it did better than I thought it was going to do. I passed the hydracarbons excellent, but I barely failed the CO carbon monoxide. The paper says I was allowed 3.00 and I registered 3.41.

I dont have any slight of clue of what this means. The guy gave me some paper that said it could be a spark plug/and, or wire? Or a distributor problem?

Has anyone had this issue? Is this going to cost an arm and a leg? Thanks for your time.

I would do a good tune up with Delco parts. CO usually means unburned fuel. Do a compression check as well, its worth the extra piece of mind.

HC is unburned fuel. CO and HC generally balance... if you are well under the limit on one, and "barely" failing on the other, then adjusting the timing can sometimes help, but you also have to watch NOx... advancing the timing too much will slam the NOx reading.

It depends on the state.
California started testing in the late 70s and it was for all "emission controlled" vehicles... emission controls started in 1963.
They began either a 15 or 20 year rolling exemption around '83, but they "froze" it when they got to 1975, so everything in California 1976 and newer must be tested unless it is a 1998 or older Diesel with GVW over 14k, hybrid, some NGV, and motorcycles.

CO isnt necessarily unburnt fuel Hydro carbons are the textbook unburnt fuel but id give her a tune up for starters plugs wires cap and rotor and go from there
in NY we just plug anything 95 and newer into the obd2 it checks all the monitors and if there is a CEL thats how we do emissions
anything older or diesel just gets the normally lights brakes tire horn check ok see ya

pull some timing off of it, make sure the carbs not running rich then re test. it may be low on power, but it should pass

Yah, i wish it was a 20yr old exemption. Here in AZ, anything 1967 and newer has to pass the emission tests. 66 is the last year of no emissions. :banghead: Its BS:cussing: Just another way for BigBrother Gov to bust our ba&#s. :bash:

With it being that close, you can probably adjust your carb a bit and pass. Then just set it back after. The retest should be free if you do it within 30 days. I would do that before I spent any money on it.

It used to be a rolling 30 year but they stopped that back in 97. That was the year I bought a 67 camaro and thought I would be exempt the next year

Gc67: That sucks man about the Camaro. I had a buddy just buy a 67 plymouth fury 3, thinking it was exempt. Bummer for sure! I will see what the shop says. I go to shadowmoutain auto service, on 32st shea. They are real cool, and never sell you anything you dont need. He was my auto instructor at GCC. I am hoping it could be just an adjustment, and not drain my bank acct. As, I spent most of my funds on buying the pickup. Doh!!
