i have a 1999 chevy 2500. its a 4 door and it has the 350 in it.. idk what transmission its got cuz im stationed in nc and the truck is in texas. but im wanting to do a cummins swap wen i get bak from deployment. it only gets like 8mpg. and i would like to get more mpg and keep the same amount of power.. could i just keep everything the way it is but just put the cummins to the chevy trans. so i dont have to do all the modifications and get different shafts and crossmember mods.. i have worked on many gas engines but this is my first diesel engine swap.. any advice...

i wouldnt take a 6.5 if it was free

Y wouldnt that transmission like the 6bt. Doesnt a good rebuilt 350 have bout the same power. Just less mpg. And I would like to keep the transmission so I dont have to worry bout gettin new shafts. Or modifyin the crossmember. Im wantin the swap to b as simple as possible but im not sure its gonna b as easy as I hoped. Any more advice. Lol

4L80E max torque spec 440-460ftlbs.

12V cummins ~400ftlbs stock, $100 bucks in mods will have it putting down 450+ftlbs easily.
24V cummins start out around 460ftlbs stock in early form, go as high as 600ftlbs in later models.

Plus it wont bolt up. :D

You'd need an adapter plate to bolt that tranny up, probly run you about 800 bucks. Your probly gonna be better off getting a dodge trany out of the doner truck and building that up and swaping it in. This swap isn't as simple as you think. Your gonna have to make some motor mounts as well. and im not sure what you gotta do to get your gauges to work. Plus i believe you gotta get new fuel lines, bigger ones. And you need to have a 3in body lift to fit the engine in, otherwise the back 2 valve covers will hit the fire wall. I've considered this swap a few times and will do it eventually when I get the money and an obs CCLB.

i know that i would have to have an adapter plate for the tranny.and custom mounts for the motor.. but i was wanting to use and older cummins like the 1st gen.. isnt it mostly mechanical.. and i been doin some readin bout it and i could only find it sayin it had like 380 tq.. im mainly wanting to do the swap to get better mpg with a full size truck..would the tranny hold up to that..

I'll let ya see mine when its done. 5.9 goes in next month in my CCLB (havent had time to do it till then, lol). Hope the construction ain't as bad around you as it is in this area.

to star101608: Yes the 4L80E will hold a first Gen fine as long as you dont get mod crazy. Thats what I'm putting in my truck, I just want away from all the electronics anymore. Been there done that, miss that truck and its mpg, but oh the wires. My 4L80E is also from a 6.5TD.

On an OBS the CTS and OPS are their own circuits, you can use the same harness just install the sensors into the new engine. Speedo is in the rear of the Tcase and should be unaffected, the tach will be hard to make work. 6.5s used the alternator for the tach, not sure on gassers.

A 4l80E will probably hold up, but as said you need an adapter to attach it to the Cummins. The best situation for you is probably to find a wrecked Dodge with the motor and trans you need. Then you can mix and max the radiator, accessories, mounts etc. to make it work.

If you can't find a donor, both GM and Dodge used the NV4500 in their pickups. Get one of those with the clutch setup, and find a Cummins/NV4500 bellhousing and flywheel to connect them.
