hey everyone. im looking at an 85 k5 blazer with an iffy 350 in it. i found a pretty cheap turbo'ed 6.5 outta a 1994 chevy pickup. relativly how expensive and long would it take to do this swap once i have all the parts. also, will a 6.5 bolt up to the tranny from the 350??? thanks!!!

The 6.5 will bolt up, but that tranny won't like it. Theres more too it, but im way to tired to type it out. someone will chime in.

No, you need to bolt up a HD 4l80e

He asked if a 6.5TD will bolt to a 700R4 and the answer is yes.

Excuse me -I can read and apparently you have a issue here about being right and your not- get the facts straight. He said nothing about a low down 700r4 and I said nothing about it not bolting up, quote"No, you need to bolt up a HD 4l80e". Let me help you understand the basic's. No-meaning-don't do it. Got it-YOUR WRONG>

will a 6.5 bolt up to the tranny from a 350 (700R4)

yes it will. but if you plan to run it for a long period of time the tranny will need improvements.

Not to mention he got all bitchy about me questioning his ability to read (he can't). The OP asked if a 6.5 bolts to "the tranny behind a 350" in his case the 700R4. That, and he couldn't type anything legible to save his nuts. Looks like he was so mad he typed it out with his fist.:shortbus:

BTW, 6.5 will bolt up, but will require special flexplates/flywheels as they are externally balanced. The 700R4 will handle low levels of power, but a healthy turbo will probably kill it pretty fast. I know mine is barely hanging on with my 6.2 power and 35's.

The best idea for a swap is using a donor truck to grab whatever you need from it (including trans and controller). Ideally you should look for a 92-93 6.5TD as they were all mechanical, had a standalone controller for the 4L80E and would be the easiest problem free swap for you.

what about if i did a 6.2 from 1 1990??
would that be any easier? i know i need the wiring harness... anything else?

The mechanically injected 6.2 and early 6.5 diesels would be the simplest to go with. The DS4 electronic injection pump can potentially put out more fuel and do it more precisely, but comes with a few big problems to deal with (the PMD for one).

You need special flexplate/flywheels for both the 6.2/6.5s, so you would probably need one depending on what trans you end up with. The 1990 models probably came with 700R4's or TH400 (which won't be good for mileage but plenty strong enough for all needs).

The wiring harness can be made very simple. I have the cold advance and high idle solenoids hooked up to switches, the Glow plugs i have wired up to a push button switch (let's me bypass the stupid stock controller and temp sensor).

The alternators are the same as any other truck from that era, so the starting/charging circuit should be the same for any truck. If the newer engine has a different style of alternator than your old 85, just swap it over and change the plug to fit the new alt.

The dual battery system is simple, here is how mine is setup:

Pass.Side
Pos- Starter and to drivers side batt.
Neg-To alternator bracket

Drivers Side
Pos- Glow plug relay and to pass.side batt.
Neg-To P.S pump bracket.

I suggest making the switch to heavier gauge cable (1/0) and running all the battery cables in that gauge. It will make a helluva difference to starting! :D
