I have been wanting to put some kind of system in my garage that i can either put a hoist on or even just a pulley system or something that can lift a good amount of weight. I have an older construction house and is slumb block and the garage has 2 walls that are thick slumb block and the roof trusses look like 2x8. Any idea how much those trusses can hold or a way to set something up? anyone have any kind of hoist system in their garage. Maybe something like this http://www.harborfreight.com/1300-lb-capacity-electric-hoist-2954.html
not harbor freight for sure but just some kind of roof hoist system.

Tie your trusses togther with a 2x6 down the middle, and it should hold a decent amount of wait. I know people that have pulled car bodies with that setup. As far as the hoist, I wouldn't go to that expense. A simple chain hoist will serve you better. http://www.harborfreight.com/2-ton-chain-hoist-631.html

The peak of the roof is the strongest part. Use a few collar ties to support a beam right under the beam. Spread the weight over a few rafters/trusses and you can support quite a bit of weight.

Get square steel poles with welded on flats, that are snug fit and use it under the beam to help support it. We do that in our garage all the time and I've have had alot hanging from that rafter (including a complete 8V92 Detroit).

Easy to put in place and also remove. Just a thought.

for some reason what ur describing doesnt click, i have a flat roof with no pitch, so its just end to end rafters with the roof above

Basically your garage is shaped like a box

Just get square steel beams that can be removed from under the rafters when your not using the hoist so your garage then looks like this

l l l l With the extra beams being the steel square beams. I'll try to get a pic of what I am talking about tonight and post later.
