I currently have a 2001 1500hd which I bought new. Well my boat has grown in size since I bought the truck and needless to say once I get rolling down the highway it does fine but it sure doesnt like taking off. My boat weight with trailer is around 10000 lbs.
What year is the most trouble free for the duramax? I have just started doing some research. I was looking for maybe a 05, or 06. I dont drive my truck much just when Im towing or the weather is bad.
If I get a diesel I really dont plan on upgrading it much. Thanks

I'd say an LBZ is your best bet. However 2006 and 2007 classics used the lbz motor. Some early 06 trucks are coded as lly but it's not much to worry about besides slightly less hp and a few other minor things. 07.5-10 are basically lbz motors with the stupid dpf emissions stuff attached. That's easily deleted though with aftermarket exhaust and tuning.

2001 - 2004.5 had the lb7 which had injector problems
2004.5 - 2005.5 have the LLY which some had overheating issues i think, not too sure
2005.5 - 2007(nbs not the nnbs) had the lbz which doesnt have common problems like the previous two and it has the most power 360 horse 660 torque compared to 300/520(lb7) and 310/ 600(lly)
so shoot for an LBZ !!!!
good luck and im jelly bc i want a diesel but cannot afford LOL

How can you tell what engine a truck has if it is a 2004? Can you use the VIN?

Use the VIN, 8th digit will tell which it has, 1 = LB7, 2 = LLY, D = LBZ.

As mentioned in here several times, the 06-07 (LLY/LBZ) were the best. However, the LLY (2004.5-2005) weren't bad either, as long as you don't overheat it. Some people have problems, some don't. But in any case, they're at least 5-7k cheaper--at least around here, so if that makes a big difference, don't count out the 04-05's. You can get a clean, low mileage crew-cab for a pretty good price.
I may be biased, but it's a good rig... lots of power, too.
