If you dont want to hassel and want plug and play Edelbrock. Now I am sorry but I am a Ford guy born and bread and we threw a 650 Eddy on a buddies 390 in its truck and its great, it has a lot of performance specially down low. It was easy to adjust and only took a few minutes to swap out the old Holley for the Eddy and was back in business picking up gals in no time.

With a 305 I would go with an edelbrock 500 cfm barrel carb. If you go with it, call me 704-827-8922 I will be more than happy to help you set it up. That's the problem with the Carter/edelbrock carbs...no one knows how to tune them. I have a 600 Carter afv on my 94 chevy truck daily driver, I get 16 mpg, and a sh,t load of power I can run 80 mph at 1/8 throttle position, I love it!. Don,t let people tell you, you need a custom chip...they DON,T WORK! I have been down that road, don't waste your money. If you just want a carb, still go with the edelbrock 500 the 305 will eat it up!

My single plane intake a BBC TBI unit setup on my 305 would eat any carbs lunch at EVERYTHING...Torque, HP, Fuel economy, driveability. Custom Chips DO work if someone knowledgeable in the subject works with it.

If your q-jet is falling on its face wide open, check the cam lobe on the secondary throttle shaft and make sure it is lifting the metering rods when secondaries are open.

Make sure the air valve tension is set properly, 305s like have a fairly tight pre-load setting of 7/8 to 1 turn.
Good call on the secondary cam is made out of a cheap plastic and years of exposure to heat and gasoline fumes tend to destory them where they go through the air valve shaft.

Just buy a reman'ed quadrajet. An Edelbrock can't compete with a q-jet for fuel economy. I am glad you are happy with 16, but my old 350 with a completely wore out quadrajet could pull 16 at 80+. Haven't drove it much since I got the new carb, so I don't know what it will do for economy on the highway. I had a good friend that was getting 18 consistently out of an old SWB on his 20 mile commute with a quadrajet.

I've never messed with Quadrajets, never had the opportunity. But I do own a Holley and love it. My CJ8 has a 4160 600 cfm with vacuum secondaries. The motor is a stock '79 305 with headers and an Edelbrock EPS intake. The carb works very well. Just make sure you get a vacuum gauge so you can adjust the idle mixture screws. You may want to buy the secondary spring kit so you adjust your secondaries. When you adjust your secondaries, you dont want to feel them kick in and you don't want the engine to bog before they kick in. You want a nice smooth transition.
