You go look at a vehicle for sale which has a 'rebuilt' or 'custom' motor - and you open the hood and it looks like any other motor. I mean, if you take the time to pull the motor and rebuild the thing....can't you take a few hours more to clean the engine bay and degrease the block and throw some hugger orange paint on it or some nice gloss red. Wouldn't you guys be more impressed and pay a lot more if you opened the hood and saw that? I know I would. Whenever I've pulled a motor - I've always painted the block and misc. parts.

It is so easy to tell most people that your motor has been rebuilt to better than stock or has been replaced and they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. This could mean they are either lying or they do shotty work and the disgusting engine bay is a sign of that.

We all know that the ol 350s were reliable and you can put a ton of miles on them, but every truck I see on craigslist with 120-180,000 miles it always states" just rebuilt 8000 miles ago" or "new engine" orsome crap like that. You look at them and they look like the same old engine that came stock in it. Hell, at least take the time and clean the engine bay if you going to claim a new engine.LOL

My fav is always the jacked up trucks with "new motor, new trans, new interior, new paintjob" Yeah. I want a truck that got sunk in a pond or got rolled mudriding

That is soooo true. My thoughts exactly on that one!

I haven't quite perfected the ability to LISTEN to a motor and be able to tell that its new or rebuilt....apart from the obvious missing or unusual noises etc. Im no engine expert and if it sounds ok and nothing obvious cming from it - then I guess its in good shape. But listening to a motor and looking at a ****ty block and engine and taking someones word for it that its been rebuilt - NO WAY.

If The guy can show reciepts of the work and the motor looks and sounds healthy then it may truly be rebuilt. If not then I would just make sure to make him an offer for a vehicle with a high mileage stock motor

Alot of times my friends and I will go talk to another car/truck guy (or so we would think he knew about cars, having a nice sounding car/truck), he would say it has a rebuilt engine, look under the hood, its a stock motor, with painted stock valve covers, painted manifolds (poorly painted intake and exhaust). Even some people say there motor has been rebuilt, even when all that was replaced was the intake.

Just like all those people with fancy paint jobs and large rims, 99% of the cars will have bad interiors and worn out 305's or V6's.

because of a misfire and straight pipes, people always ask if my truck has a rebuilt motor with a monster cam. since my engine is pretty clean, little does anybody know its stock on 180,000 miles.:naughty:
simple piece of advice ask for paperwork whenever buying a used car/truck, cause anybody can just say "rebuilt motor or tranny"

guess im weird. When i pull a motor i work on the inside.. You will be able to tell its Built with out poping the hood. Just my 2 cents. I never paint it etc,

I LOVE the statement: New paint, NO RUST......really? Of course no rust fellow, you just painted over it!

I do ask for paperwork if people say its rebuilt. If I open the hood and it looks like ****ty crud or the yard/house looks like that too - then I at least know it wasn't taken care of. If someone is lazy cleaning their house/yard - then most of the time they are lazy with their truck maintenance too.....

OK, I live in NY State, I pulled the heads to do gaskets, and I threw some paint on them. i figure any protection I can get against rust is a plus, especially when it's that easy. If you have your block all cleaned up for a rebuild, why not slap some paint on it? If you have to get it running again NOW. I can understand, because I wanted to paint my 350 before I put it in, but time was of the essence.

If you don't do it right, you do it twice. (just my $0.02)
