Well when I bought my 87 V30 it was big and nasty to look at and ran... It was about 3 or 4 differant colors, but it had a 6 inch lift (with no shocks) and a Dana 60 up front a TH400, Np 205 t case, and 14 bolt FF rear end, and a rough 350 carbed, so far I have gotten skyjack shocks, new pitman arm, new axle seals, new long tube headers well used but new to me, new edelbrock performer intake with a edelbrock 650 cfm thunder series off road carb, it has 35/12.50/R16.5 BFG Mudders and I'm getting 39.5 tsl Iroks for her and some new rims. I got a 350 I'm going to strock out to a 383 and give her a nice paint job and go from there :)
I'll get some pics tomorrow

sounds like a pretty nice project. too bad someone converted it back to carb...IMO part of the 87's charm is the 73-87 (91) body style and the TBI. can't wait to see pics, i'd LOVE to have a V20-V30

Hey guys, Um,...This might be a stupid question, but what is a v20 or v30? I have never heard of those. Is it just a bigger engine?
Thanks again

no, not a stupid question at all! in 1987, GM was gearing up to introduce it's new 1/2 ton trucks to the public. but they weren't ready with their heavy duty 2500/3500 series...their solution? to run the old body style C/K along with the new model C/K!! but wait, now we have another problem...we have two vastly different trucks designated C/K! so, seeing as they wanted to keep the C/K designation they had used for decades alive, they renamed the outgoing (73-91 bodystyle) trucks R/V (R=2wd V=4wd). so, from 87-91 the 73-86 trucks were called R/V and the new for '88 trucks were called C/K. they ran into the problem again in '99 and once again in '07, but this time solved the problem by simply calling the outgoing models "classics"

I also got a question..ive been told that a Scottsdale model is top line and also been told it's bottom line, I'm new to the old Chevys

Silverado is top, then Scottsdale, then Custom Deluxe. You also have Cheyenne Super, Cheyenne and Bonanza in the earlier years.
FordeatinZ71
09-11-2011, 10:57 AM
the Scottsdale package was introduced in 1975, and was one step above the base model Custom Deluxe (which was neither "Custom" or "Deluxe", btw). it was lower than the Bonanza, Cheyenne and the Silverado packages.
in 1981 it was still below the Cheyenne and Silverado packages but now had two packages under it...the Custom Deluxe and the ultra-rare Custom Sport.
after 1987, you just had the Cheyenne, Scottsdale and the Silverado packages...so, the Scottsdale is neither the base nor the top model

Ohh ok thank you! I could never find anything on that. So my grand-father-inlaw gave me 2 dashes from a 80s Chev with a tach and both had wood grain. So I took my dash and cluster all apart last night and found out the dash and cluster he gave me was from 73ish (from what I looked up) and I also read that they won't work together
FordeatinZ71
09-11-2011, 01:11 PM
the 73-79 gauges and cluster can be made to work, but they are not the correct style for an 81-87 truck. the font was different on the gauges. the printed circuits on the clusters changed somewhat but as far as i know they should still plug in and work. as for the dashes, the only two changes in the 73-80 are from the middle of the dash over to the passenger side the dash curves down at an angle and that the area around the gauges is curved different. whereas on the 81-91 dashes it turns straight down on the passenger side and the curve is different around the gauges. once you get use to the differences you'll be able to spot what year range dash it is from 100 yards away.
p.s.-also, on the 73-80 dashes, the trim doesn't curve around the edge of the dash (the trim around the AC vents, if so equipped) and on the 81-91 dashes it does.

Oh hmm I had them both apart and the tach would fit where my fuel gauge is but there us no connectors in the back for the fuel gauge on the bottom left, I'm just going to do all new gauges, I tried to post some pic earlier but bone of them when threw, it doesn't even show the txt I had in it

ooooohh. your problem wasn't the cluster being a different year, your problem was the cluster being from a different optioned truck...
clusters for the 73-87 came in 4 possible configurations...
1. no options...idiot lights where 4 small gauges are, big fuel gauge
2. gauge options...voltmeter, oil press, temp gauges, one hole blank, big fuel gauge
3. gauge options...all above mentioned gauges with blank spot filled with clock, big fuel gauge.
4. tach option...all gauges mentioned above minus clock. tiny fuel gauge replaces clock, tach goes where fuel gauge normally is.
to make a tach work, you have to have a printed circuit for a tach, or modify your cluster and wire it in...

I've figured out the tach, it just fits right in but it's my fuel gauge (the small one) that won't work there is no Printed citric in that spot it cut out. I thought about switching the curcit paper but then I'm loosing out one some other stuff. My solution is now haha i have a new oil presher, temp, and volts gauges and I'm going to buy a new speed o, tach and fuel gauge and fit them into it. I love the stock gauges but new ones are nice :)

don't waste your money or time on header wrap. it will only turn good headers to junk prematurely.
FordeatinZ71
09-13-2011, 04:26 AM
$1,000?! you could part it out and make a good bit more than that. i've seen people sell good D60s alone for $1,500. granted, i'd never pay that...but i've seen it happen.
powerhour
09-13-2011, 12:16 PM
There no way I would part it out or sell it, I'm just going to keep rebuilding it haha. Isn't header wrap good? It lowers the exhaust temp
Your41Plague12
09-13-2011, 02:28 PM
It doesn't lower exhaust temperature, the exhaust is still just as hot on the inside. It just keeps some heat from escaping out into the under-hood compartment. It also traps moisture between the wrap and the headers and will rot out steel headers in no time at all. If you're concerned about them melting your plug wires, I suggest running your plug wires through some header wrap. That's a decent mod.

Hmm that is very true and me living on Vancouver island there is always moister here haha I'll try wrapping my plugs.
I've sanded my frame and drive train and rust gaurded it to protect it from here haha

Nice. I'll probably go with 40x13.5R16's or 42's when I do mine. 9" of lift with bushwackers towers over the 38's. It needs at least 40's, but if I can stuff 42's I'll do it. I'll have the only street legal truck in my area with tires that big, as far as I know. It has to be street legal, I get pulled over all the time.

Haha just stuffed in the wheel wells and so awesome, I obey got 3 of my rims :( so I have tO wait to get them on, I got black rock rims they look sick on the truck! I'll mount the 3 tomorrow hopefully and put the front two on to see what it looks like and I WILL have my phone to take pics!
