Would an Air Locker be good idea for a 2WD in the Winter and off road?

Air lockers, being selectable, give you the easy and predictable handling characteristics of an open diff, but a full locker when engaged.

Just as an FYI, full lockers (or an engaged air locker) are a handful on on the street on ice or hard pack snow. This is because when both tires spin, all lateral traction can be lost. But, with an air locker, it will get you out of those stupid stucks (like spinnign one tire at a stop sign, or unable to get out fo the damn driveway), but still leave you able to leave the diff open at speed.

That makes sense, I have been wondering for years how it would work. That would be nice for the stop sign and driveway stucks in the snow. Thank you for the quick response.

sure you know but if you don't already have a compressor, it'd be cheaper to run an e-locker. same end result, just electronic instead of pneumatic.

Or you could go with a Torsen Gleeson design locker, also known as a Detroit True trac http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DTL-913A481/ . There are no friction discs to wear which means no additives and no maintenance. Once you get wheel spin, you simply tap the brake and the centrifugal force engages it. Some of the military HMMWV's use them and they work great. I will be putting one in my truck very soon along with 4:11 gear. Just my two cents. Best of luck finding what's right for ya.
