ok so me and a couple of friends were talking about how to make my truck beastly.
my idea is to get
383 kit
1.6 rockers
Large port Bowtie heads
MPFI Spider (just to get rid of the poppets)
Longtube Headers
Tune
* idk which cam... i like the stock cam because i dont really want a cammin` idle...it sounds kick ass just not for me if i could find a sleeper cam that would be the best
E-fans
Built 4l60e
4.30 gears....(currently have 33 12.50's)
eaton elocker
this is one of my plans.. any input would be greatly appreciated

No point in putting those heads and that cam together....especially with that intake. Poorly mismatched parts combination. 062 or 906 casting, and all else as posted above, you have a respectable build.

i have no clue how to build motors honestly, but what is a good combo, cause i want to get new heads anyway.. honestly i just want gobs of torque ha

What kind of numbers does that produce?

Expect at least that much torque with stock Vortec heads.

Nice!!! So def. Stock heads So whats an expected 1/4 mile run?

....... So whats an expected 1/4 mile run?
Well.........that depends on a whole lot more than what the engine contributes! I could guarantee 13-sec naturally aspirated ET's in my own truck with that engine, but I have no idea of your plan or capability to bring it all together in your own.
Weight? Traction/Suspension/Tires? Torque converter?

Idk which torque converter cause idk jack about them..which one should i get??.. And its has 33 12.50 15 mud terrains, wanting to put a locker in with 4.30's.. Maybe traction bars with new bilstein 5100 shocks all the way around for all of
That.. Oh and the truck weighs 4700 lbs

I would add the 1.6 rockers though.

So cam and 1.6 rockers or all stock and 1.6 rockers??

I would run the 1.6 rockers with the HT383/Ram Jet 350 cam. The Ram Jet 350 uses 1.6 rockers with that cam. In the Chevy HiPerformance article linked above, they saw a bit of a gain in both torque and horsepower when they switched to 1.6 rockers.

here's a link for the lt4 hot cam they use in that build along with the valve springs you would have to replace anyway and 1.6 rockers.

This will move your torque peak higher in the rpm range, but it will be a higher peak so you have to decide what exactly you want
EDIT: the kit is cheaper at Jegs btw

And here is the HT383/Ram Jet 350 cam that 96ImpSS and myself were talking about.

Would you even need new valve springs to run that cam on Vortec heads? Looks like it would be cutting it close with 1.6 rockers, but with 1.5 it seems like you'd be ok

In a 383 with the L31 intake, you'd be shifting by 5000 anyway, so new stock Vortec springs would be ok for valve control. They will be very close to accomodating the ~.480 lift. The "ghetto grind" of a few thousandths from the bottom of the stock retainers would do the trick..

I haven't been able to find any info that indicates that the Ram Jet 350 uses a different spring or retainer. However, the retainer to valve stem/seal clearance should still be checked.

I think your best bet would be a Yank truck converter: www.converter.cc
Dave Myers is the guy there. Tell him ALL your information, and you'll get a better converter match for your vehicle than anyone on here could suggest.

I did kind of the same build on my conversion van. I built a 383, I used Edelbrock E-Tec heads #90939 (vortec style aluminum) a PCMforless tune, Doug Thorley long tube headers, and I am now having the Trans built by CPT Transmission to handle the extra power. I forget why/who, but I was talked out of 1.6 rockers? I forget why?

alright well what do you guys think of a tuned port injection set up?
i got some runners and 52mm throttle body for free for now.., and i was just going to get edelbrock tpi for the vortec heads and a jantzer ported plenum and then idk what injectors to get..or honestly how to hook it up... i just know my buddies dad just put some new "bigger" runners in and i got the stock ones

Even though many guys use them on bigger engines, the TPI's were designed for the 305 engine turning no more than about 4500-5000rpm. So consequently they don't allow larger engines to perform to their fullest. The Edelbrock Vortec base and a ported plenum would help some, but those stock runners will be the restriction. There is a reason that your buddy's dad upgraded to the larger runners. They might be fine if you don't plan on turning your 383 more than about 3500-4000 rpm. The injectors need to be sized according to the engine's size and anticipated HP output. Quite honestly if you really want EFI, I would look into one of the aftermarket EFI packages from Edelbrock or Holley. Those are pretty much plug and play. Holley now has the Avenger EFI operating system that tunes itself.

thats lil pricey for me, but i like it...i can find some larger runners and a completely ported tpi system would that help..large runners and ported plenum..i dont plan on hitting 5000 to often, but im not gonna say i hardly do.. i just THINK it would be better than stock vortec as of now...just any ideas are great thanks guys

How should i wire up the injectors?
Captainfab
11-02-2011, 01:12 PM
Is this going into a GMT400 truck? If so then do a search for the marine intake swap on here or over on the GM performance forum. That should show you what you need to know to wire up the injectors.
