Looking into getting a diesel, my 2004 1500 Z71 is starting to show its age. I have been wanting a diesel for some time now but never could afford one. Ive found plenty around 20K give or take a few thousand, just curious on what i should be looking out for when i give it a look over. I hear from everyone diesels can last forever but its still uneasy paying around 20 for one with around 130K miles on it. One im really looking at is an 06 with 117K on it for 22K, is that a good deal? It has the normal features inside: bucket/cloth seats, extended cab standard bed. I would just like some info from the diesel experts, dont wanna spend that kind of money then run into lots of issues down the road.

Well im not too knowledgable about diesels as others are but I was told when buying one you should be aware if it has a chip or tuner in it. it voids waurentee on different things. The best thing to look for is if the engines clean. if it is you know it hasnt been taken aprart alot. Thats about all I know besides the regular routine on buying any vehicle.

Yea just try and stay away from the 03 and under, they have the injector problems.

And the early 04. If it's coded LB7 for the motor it's bad news for injectors. LLY started in 04.5 and has significantly less expensive problems to fix.

The 06 you're looking at sounds about right price wise, like others have said, look for history. You want Grandpa and Grandma's HD that towed a single horse trailer the odd time, or a small camper, but mostly got them to church and the grocery store. You don't want the chip/tuner stacked rookie kid's construction/farm truck who's favourite saying was "Of course I can pull that, don't bother calling for a transport" during the day, and "Rollin' coal, sniping ricers" at night. Plenty of construction/farm trucks are good buys, just depends who had them (site boss, etc.).
Check the hour meter, can tell alot about a vehicle's history. I think by 06 they worked out the bug where it could be reset.

Quyonmob - thanks ive been trying to find one of those, all people tell me is dont get one that had a tuner/chip. I think i might have found an 05 for 21K it has 131K miles on it im sure i can talk them down to 19 for it but it looks like an older persons truck by the bfg a/t's and bed cover, the front seat doesnt even have wear like it should.

No wear on the seat edge is a good sign for that mileage, indicates longer road trips, rather than frequent getting in and out that a work vehicle is likely to show.
