I have an 86 k104x4 was wondering how big of a project to go from a small block to a big block ? It has a 700r4 trans in it i'm pretty sure that will bolt up not sure on the motor mounts. Also has anyone heard of the left rear upper shock mount ripping the frame where it monts to?

Unbolt small block, bolt in big block. Only real issue is p/s pump, they won't interchange.

Thanks thats great news. are you talking about the bracket that holds p/s pump?

very easy like b454rat said, but good luck getting the trans and axles to hold up over time.

Already found a 14bolt ff and a d60 with 4:56 gears. Gonna try and fit a 38x12.50x15 under it with a 6 in lift. We'l go with that till the tranny goes but it does have a fresh rebuild on it.

sounds like your set! but i would keep an eye out for cheap sm465 or th400 because you will most likely need it down the road.

i would say if you built the 700r4 good enough it would survive pretty well..

Well i am pretty sure i just traded my built jeep for a 1980 one ton flat bed 4x4 with a 454 in it plus some cash. How would the dually rear wheel convert to a single rear wheel? I hope everything will go good on all the swaping over might put the motor on a stand until huntin season is over and build it pretty stout.

You can convert the dually to single, but need the single parts to do it. Be easier to just get the singe rear axle.

Yea I found out that drw 14 bolt is narrower than the srw. But i was told that you could just use a wheel spacer on the rear to make them match up. I am with yal mite just try to do some trading for a srw. Think i am going to wait till after deer season to do it so i should have plenty of time to see what i need. Not even for sure this guy is gonna trade we talked last night and was a 1000 dollars off he is going to call back today. If he does i will post back , then i will really be asking some questions.

I'm just concerned about the transmission

well, the stock 700R4 isn't gonna hold up to even a mild 454 long if you're hard on it. but...if you have that 700R4 built to the hilt it will easily hold what that 454 can dish out. if you don't care about OD though i'd swap in a SM465 or Th400...they'll hold the power of a stock/mild 454 stock with no modifications. sounds like you are gonna have one bad@$$ 86...post some pics for us to look at!

I will try and get some good pics up soon. Well yal was right about the 700r4 . On the way home from beer camp 4th gear started slipping pretty bad . When I got home i checked the fluid and it was a pint and half low so i went to town and got some lucas auto trans fluid. Went for a test drive about a 12 mile loop and it only did it once and it was not as bad at all . Crossing my fingers that was all that was wrong with it. But when the big boy engine goes in it looks like it is coming out I just hope that it holds till deer season is over cuz i think i just sold my jeep today but who knows talk is talk cash is great.

damn dude, i'm sorry to hear that. you didn't even have the 454 in it yet, did ya?

magnum12
10-17-2011, 07:35 AM
No the 454 is not in and won't be for a while. Like I said i am hoping the trans will hold up maybe the low fluid issue was causing that . That's all i can hope for now . If it aint that will put a stop to any other projects cuz that will for sure mob the money .

FordeatinZ71
10-17-2011, 08:42 AM
that could have been it. hopefully you didn't cause too much damage driving it while slipping. next time if OD is slipping put it in D so it won't try to go into OD.

I told yal wrong it was drive that was slipping not overdrive. Anyway changed fluid and filter last night and went to try it out and the dam electric fan stopped working so it started running hot . By then it was getting dark and i was pissed sat down with a beer and pouted about it . Gonna try to mess with it tonight I guess all the setting that truck did and i am starting to drive it alot all the bugs are waking up . hope this is a simple fix. By tha wat trans fluid taste like s*#t.

how do you know what $h!t tastes like? just kidding. hopefully fluid was the issue...i know when thr 700R4 gets low enough it will not engage OD, and D will slip. you just need to find out why the fluid leaked out to begin with...

Got the pan off without a big mess then my 3yr old helper needed my ratchet when i told him to bring it back 2 or 3 drops went in my mouth. Another excuse for a beer break haha. If that electric fan has a bad connection that may have caused that fluid to get hot a time or two . If it is done raining when i get home i'm gonna check all that to worked fine the last two weeks . Like i said i think the germlins are pissed i woke them up.

Lol you're going to think i'm crazy but on my old OBS i managed to let the fluid get low enough that there was no fluid on the dip stick, and it must of been like that for a little bit cuz the bottom of the dipstick was starting to rust and it still drove fine with no slips or anything

FordeatinZ71
10-19-2011, 06:12 AM
yea i ran mine below the dipstick once ('91 K1500) and it did fine...but, one time the servo seal failed on the side of the transmission and THEN it slipped so bad i thought i blew it. but i fixed the seal, added fluid and thank god it was ok...:D

Well think i got everything back together after a bolt broke off while trying to change thermostat so much for preventive matenance. Fan works like it should new coolant jug and new thermostat and a bottle of water wet if it runs hot now piss on it. Now we can get back to the tranny issue this weekend . Gonna drive to beer camp this weekend and try it out with the lil rain we got might be some wet dirt terrain to play in. THE MUD FLIES TILL THE MOTOR DIES.

x2 good luck on trying to blow up any SBC period lol

b454rat
10-21-2011, 05:13 AM
I've done it not that hard.....Don't care how good that 305 runs, I'd make it boat anchor and drop in the 454, you won't be disappointed.

FordeatinZ71
10-21-2011, 06:12 AM
yea, SBCs are great engines, and with proper maintenance will last a long, long time...but with proper neglect they WILL blow quite easily...

magnum12
10-21-2011, 07:19 AM
I won't try to blow it up. It's a mild built 350 thats in it with less than 10k on rebuild it has some nice parts inside and out of the motor it realy runs strong but more is always better. Like my buddy says to . TO MUCH HORSEPOWER IS ALMOST ENOUGH.

magnum12
10-21-2011, 07:20 AM
Will sell the 350 when I get the big block ready

FordeatinZ71
10-21-2011, 07:24 AM
ah, i didn't realize you had a 350...yea, don't blow that up...

Yal know anybody thats lookin for a built jeep? 83 cj7 with a fresh 350 with a mild cam , rebuilt turbo 350, np205 trans case , dana 44 front with 4;88 gears, amc20 rear with locker and 4;88 gears , new 38.5x14.50x15 super swamper tsl sx tires , 8000lb warn upright winch. The entire drive train has around 2000 miles on it, It's white with a red hard top. Asking 6500 OBO. Gotta sell it so I can pay for the 86 I been talkin about.

Well everything ran fine this weekend after a fuel filter change it was bad. That what might have been what i thought was the trans slippin but the engine was missing or starving for fuel when at cruz speed . Well whatever it was its gone now .
