I went to the yard today looking for a steering box for my 99. I saw this brown 2wd crew cab dually with a blown 6.2 in it. For Michigan it was in good shape. It was a shame to see it in a salvage yard. The rear had been pulled along with the front wheels. I think the yard pulled the rear themselves, as the trucks all seem to have no rear axles unless it's a 10-bolt. I was looking at the front suspension....... the control arms are stamped, but they're really beefy looking, as are the front brake calipers. I don't think I've ever seen a 1-ton squarebody front suspension up close before.
The paint color didn't look original as the dash had been pulled, and it wasn't brown, so I suppose it could have been bondo filled, but I didn't see anything obvious evidence of that.
I wish I could afford a project truck....... a dually wouldn't be my first choice, but If that's what was available.

Especially here in the state of roadsalt. No crash damage, minimal rust, just a blown 6.2 diesel.

yep, we have some bad ones here at my local junkyard...some that appear to have just a blown engine but that look good otherwise...

Been awhile since I been on here I actually just picked myself up a 3+3 its a 79 gmc only had 171 468 original kilometers on the old girl the body's rusted out and a front fenders pretty banged up but all in all I love the truck its only got a 350 in it buy I plan to swap to a 454 with a newer 5speed and convert it to a dually the cab its self is solid other then the rockers and cab corners does anyone know if doors from a 89 90 or 91 classic suburban will fit on these??? I'm also thinking of converting to a 4x4 as my dads dad has an old 3/4 77 on his farm that he's giving me for a parts truck pretty excited to start on this truck its all I think about these days lol

congrats on picking up the...uhm, pick up. sounds like you have good plans for her. and yes, the doors were all exactly the same from 1973-1991 (classics, obviously)

Haha Thnx man the only reason I put classic was because I posted somewheres else and everyone was thinking the 88-98 body style and said no I'm in the right place now lol, ill get some pics of the truck later today

"savage yard" - I like it. :D It is kind of what comes to mind on the few occasions I go to LKQ (formerly "Pick-A-Part") because it seems the self-service yards are the worst in terms of people doing dumb things to get their parts off, usually destroying every other part around it in the process. I call these guys the "rock and hammer crew." F'in savages. :D

Yeah..... and my local yard seems to turn vehicles over quick, too. It's not like the yards I've seen before....... weeds growing and cars sitting for years. There's no weeds (which I admit is kind of nice) little odds and ends from the vehicles are buried in the dirt/rock, and the yard looks like it's scraped when cars are cleared out. I'm guessing it's run this way becasue the price of scrap is higher than it was years ago. The first day I went, they were actively crushing vehicles. I consoled myself a bit by telling myself they'd been pretty well picked over and they were 1/2 tons which are very numerous. Still it was sad to see GMT-400's get crushed. The 1/2 ton 4x4 sqaurebody that I had previously seen was gone, I think...... along with an older medium duty truck. That truck only had a straight 6. If it had a Detroit, I would have been very sad, even though the body wasn't the best on that one.
I know that not everything can be saved, but I still wish more was used/re-used/saved.
I should go back this week. I totally forgot that I need a new hood release for my 99. I can take pictures of the two SUV's with big wooden bumpers so everyone can make fun of them :-)

Quick question would it be hard to swap in a straight axle in the front of my 3+3 I found a complete 94 1 ton roller with a 454 5 speed and GM corporate 14 bolt ff the parts truck sitting out at the farms a 3/4 ton with a Dana 60 front axle I believe and has an np205 in it were the frames any diffrent between the red and 4x4s other then crossmembers but ill have those too all I can think of that I'd need is driveshafts as the one on the farms only a single cab long box its a 74 or 75 I believe and I think the front axle might be 4:10's but not totally sure haven't seen the truck in a while

swapping the axle in is pretty easy...many people have done 4wd conversions on these trucks...its basically bolt in other than welding the leaf spring hangers...

A 94 is a GMT-400 with IFS.

no 454...READ. he's using the '94 for other parts. the "farm truck" he is robbing parts off of has a Daner 60 and a EnPee 205 (he thinks)
