Were you monitoring the temp gauge? Any spikes or unusual activity?
If it's the stock gauges, they can't be trusted. But if you just got through pulling a long hill with a NA 6.2 diesel, it will probably run hot as it works hard. When I was driving through the mountains of Quebec (big ass hills with steep grades, not really mountains) my 6.2 would drop to about 1700-2000RPM and stay there. I don't have an RPM gauge, but it's an educated guess, based on that being it's peak torque range. No matter how much more pedal I gave it, I would just cause more smoke and heat.
This was the only time ever, that I saw the temp gauge climb over halfway...so it must have gotten real hot
My issue was lack of air. Using a choked, c-code manifold with the OEM pump (rebuilt once in it's life I believe) and probably the OEM pump settings. So I wasn't driving a beast :aniteef:

I forgot to mention that it could just be something stuck to the exhaust or something. I'm having a hard time deciding on what hot really smells like right now
