First off i have a 98 k1500 and the trans just grenaded reverse. I live at 6100 ft altitude and will be towing 5k lbs at least once a month next summer as i will be taking the race car to and from denver. there is about a 3000 ft change in altitude between here and the track. I towed my car back as it had broke down in CO and the truck wasnt happy. I am looking at a trans off ebay that is from denver so they are local. here is the link http://www.ebay.com/itm/4L60E-CHEVY-REBUILT-TRANSMISSION-HIGH-PERFORMANCE-TUFF-/160666095083?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item2568720deb
I called them and they said that without the core charge they would do 1000 out the door and 1100 if I kept the trans is this about par for the course since i am new to the FSC scene and seems fairly cheap compared to the trans for the other cars i have.
the truck is going to get a setup similar in power to this motor http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHEVY-383-VORTEC-450HP-420FTLBS-STROKER-ENGINE-350-/200664647216?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item2eb88b8630
Secondly I have a 93 s10 blazer that is slated to get a v8 swap and from all i have been reading is that to do it right a v8 4l60e is needed as the v6 trans will grenade super quick. could I keep the trans from the 98 and have it rebuilt local and then use it or will there be issue since it is newer aka with the electronics not matching. Any insight would be great and if that trans from the ebay link looks legit let me know I need to get the truck back on the road before the snow starts flying heavy

for towing get the biggest transcooler you can fit behind the grill.
ask them about these parts:
is a vette servo installed? should be.
what kind of sunshell is installed? beast or gm hardened. it should be one of these. beast would be best.
planetaries? ensure they are gm and not aftermarket.
if these guestions can be answered correctly sounds like a good deal to me.
ensure you get a new or remanufactured torque converter and flush out the lines prior to install.
v6 trans can be upgraded during rebuild to handle a v8.

Stacked plate cooler! Aren't the V6 trans the same as the V8? That trans looks nice! All I know is that the 4l60E trans needs a good builder not just good parts! I would research them and any other companies as much as you can!!

Two trans builders that have these transmissions holding some pretty nice time slips!!!

thx for the links but if I am right they are on the east coast and I am up here in the mountains and if I nuke the built trans it is only 2 hrs to the shop off the ebay link. That would mean that I would be down for alot shorter amount of time and prolly be cheaper after you factor the shipping from the east coast. The cooler I found this http://www.frozenboost.com/product_info.php?cPath=217&products_id=1114&osCsid=8ab82bfa8ac1f0154071662f02eef371 would that be enough or should I look for bigger still?

x2 on the sun gear shell. i've seen the centers broken on factory ones from some idiot that got stuck and doing the reverse to 1st move. some places will "patch" the trans because only the sun gear shell is broken and the clutches look fine. just make sure you get a receipt with all the parts listed. and as for the trans cooler, the 01 up ford super duty diesels with the 4r100 trans coolers are massive and fit behind the grille on most trucks. it has odd metric size lines though.

well i picked up the trans today looks like it will hopefully be what i need since i am going to have to drop the stock y for the exhaust I am going to run the more open header to dual glass packs then flows behind them the old ventura I stripped and sold will give its dumped straight piped section to the truck to keep it fairly mellow while driving. The trans came with a recon tq converter and a buddy that has a old school sbc truck said he has one and hasnt had a bit of issues with it. if this is the first time doing a trans drop on a truck like this what kind of time requirement should i be expected to set aside with basic air tools and no lift just jacks. hoping to do it on monday before the snow flies on tuesday.
