Hey guys, figured the diesel section would be the place to ask this...

i'm looking at picking up at 99 k3500 dump with a 6.5 in it. Its only got about 45k miles on it but it was used a lot as parking lot plow truck for a company.

It has some issues, everything I can figure out but when it comes to the diesel issues, i'm lost!!

it fires up great and drives down the road great, but every once in a while when i come to a stop, it will stall. 9 out of 10 it starts back up, that one time i had to let it sit for about 5 minutes then it fired right back up and ran fine. I dont own this truck yet but i can buy it pretty cheaply.

btw the dealership just replaced the fuel pump on the rear tank thinking that was the problem and that raised the price up almost $1k. Its my wifes families dealership so i'm hoping i can get them to drop their insanely high $85 labor rate a bit.

It's 9/10 chance it's your PMD or your OPS/Lift pump

Buy a new PMD, mount it in the diesel bumper nostril (if so equipped) make or buy a kit to do this, and get an OPS extension hose, new OPS and a nw lift pump. This should make the truck more dependable.

The OPS (oil pressure sensor) is down low on the pass.side of the block...which tends to fail often and is hard to get to. It may not be an issue so much to your new truck as its a 99, so the lift pump isn't entirely dependent on the OPS for operation. But the OPS extension hose, is just a hose that extends the OPS up above the intake for quick change operation.

I'd look into a 3" down pipe and 4"diamond eye exhaust for the truck ASAP as I'm sure your truck is gonna need some more motivation and these items can be had for less than $350 and is big enough for any amount of power you could make with a 6.5 LOL

i figured this would move to me needing to make more performance lol...

first i'm going to get it running good, then i'll most likely add performance. I have some work to do on the plow and dump box. It needs to start making me money before i can throw money at it.

btw where do i look to buy stuff for this truck?

How much are you buying the exhaust for?

I think diamond eye is cheaper at $299 here:

www.pmdcable.com

and also has a great lift pump upgrade option and an improved fuel level sender for the tank assembly.

should i buy a whole new PMD? or just re-locate the pmd thats there and see how it works?

i was looking at the exhaust on ssdiesel, turbo back. Though my cousin says i should put stacks on it haha

It's good to replace them PMD at any sign of issue. It's also part of owning a electronic 6.5 that you carry 1 or 2 extra PMDs with the truck at all times.

Once the PMD is relocated, they tend to last longer because they get cooler air. But they are not perfect and will fail. I think there are some pricier options out there, but I don't know if they are worth the cost. I know more about the mechanically injected models. They are more reliable but offer far less control of fuel and have smaller pumps.

Just to update this...
New PMD relocated to near the fuse box and a heatsink and its running great!!

also i have a Diamond Eye turbo back exhaust on the way! should be here monday. Its a work truck by why not add a little performance.

So far i've hauled about 2.5 ton of stone in the bed and its handled it great! My crew cab is so happy to have the work load taken off of it.

Nice! :rocking:

Next grab an EGT gauge, then you can really start letting the fuel flow freely. Run a nice Heath tuned ECM and you'll be limited by your EGTs and GVWR from that point on.

just a little update to say she's still running strong... i wanna order up a 3 gauge pod for it at some point but cash is a bit tight right now. Hopefully this spring it will get a few more goodies..i need to grab pics of it since i've cleaned it up and done some LED safety lighting and LED 1050 lumen backup lights!!

Having more information will allow you to truly start messing with extra power.

A good trans temp, EGT and boost gauge (I'm assuming that's probably what the 3 gauges you will be using) will definitely give you the info you need :D

I've been learning a lot over on some other forums too about the true performance work for these trucks. Including some discussions on ceramic coatings, precups and their effects, turbo swaps, lift pump upgrades, injection pump upgrades and more. It's fascinating but all very expensive

I can't wait to get more money :rocking:
