I've never started these build threads from the start, they've always been after the fact. This one i'll start from the start. The truck is a 2011 Chevy Silverado LT 2500 HD Duramax.

Here it is this past friday when i got it home:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/jimmyboy8301/2011%20Silverado/2011-11-12_13-39-10_972.jpg

After removing the lower valance, and demold/debadge:

This coming saturday the bed is getting rhino lined, and tuesday it's getting tinted, also a truxedo truxport tonneau is on order. next week the dealer should be installing the hitch platform, tow mirrors, and rear fender liners.

Before the end of the year i should have my stereo system/navigation installed, and hopefully paint.

after the winter should be a BDS 6.5" lift with 20" BMF's and 35" Toyo's and a dual 4" MBRP exhaust.

I am sure it'll look awesome. :cheer: Can the exhaust be modified without voiding the warranty, as long as it's from the DPF back?

WildChevys
11-20-2011, 05:18 PM
as long as it'a filter back (which it seems most are including the one i'm going with) i believe your fine. i don't know much of a difference sound/power wise a filter back is going to make but we'll see. i'm going with MBRP's 4" cool duals exhaust in stainless. they claim up to a 18hp gain and EGT's reduced up to 200 degrees.

My new Equinox has a b/u camera, standard on the 1LT's now, it's neat. The guys at work with the 2011's are mad because the 2012's have better options on the 1LT's. It also has the fancy touch screen radio/Ipod thing.

yea my wife's terrain has the b/u camera also pretty cool. i dont think in the LT's the options for the silverado's between the 11's and 12's are much different at all, if any. the camera might be the only difference.

Should be a nice project! Working at a diesel performance shop I hate to see a Duramax "wasted" on fears of legality and warranty, but should be a nice looking truck. Personally I would have gone with an exhaust that dumps under the bed with a big black tip hanging just visibly under there because of the lift. Not a fan of the "cool duals", seems only Dodge kids do that around here.

WildChevys
12-02-2011, 02:03 PM
i actually changed my mind, as of now i'm not going to do any exhaust. ANY DPF back exhaust is a waste of money since it wont gain you any power and wont make it any louder. for now i'm leaving the exhaust alone.

oneloudz71
12-02-2011, 02:17 PM
Whatever you do, don't tune it with the DPF on it, all you will do is plug everything up and you will be getting kicked into regen CONSTANTLY.

So what is the exact purpose of the fender liners, to keep snow/mud and other debris from getting stuck up under the bed? I wish they made them for OBS trucks when they were new.

The truck sure is looking good, the 50% on the front looks just about perfect. I think I'm going to go with 50% all the way around the car now after seeing the darkness. She's coming along nicely!!

The biggest benefit is the look. The front wheel well is always black, but GM leaves the rear wheel well the color of the bed, which looks ridiculous. Here is a white example, this guy put some wheels and tires, but left the rear fender liners off :fail:

nope, no point. a DPF back exhaust is a waste of money and would be PURELY for looks. it will not gain ANY performance and will not gain ANY sound. the only way to gain power and sound on an LML is to remove the DPF and DEF which will make the truck illegal and void the warranty on a 8k plus motor. no thanks.

RedBehemoth
12-03-2011, 06:26 PM
well i guess when you get bored of that wierd looking exhaust tip you can just hack it off and dump it or just for some reason find some extra money you can get it for looks IMO.

WildChevys
12-03-2011, 07:06 PM
the exhaust tip is designed like that to cool the exhaust coming out for when the truck regens. during the regen process the temp inside the DPF goes above 1100 degrees and the exhaust during regen comes out at about 600 degrees. that tip allows air in the back of the "musket tip" to cool the exhaust coming out of it.

i wanted a DPF in the worst way untill i did some reading to see it was pretty much worthless and that there is actually a point to that ugly ass tip lol

Man one of my buddies just got an 11 and removed all the emissions crap and got a basic tune for it just so the check engine light is not on and it is such a nice ride! Its just so stupid all the crap they put on the new diesels. If you live somewhere that you dont have to pass emissions I would take the dpf and all the other stuff off.

How many people do you know that have blown a motor due to an exhaust and tune? Tranny, sure that weak a$$ Alison can granade very easily with added HP. The only time I have see motor issues due to added power was the cranks and those were on supercharged applications. I get where you are coming from, a motor is expensive, I just wouldn't be worried about that. Obviously you arn't worried about other parts of your warranty seeing as how with the lift and larger tires they could void your warranty on any remaining factory suspension components, tranny, transfer case, front diff, rear end...

my dealer is VERY lift friendly they sell new lifted chevys both 1500's and 2500's. i've talked to the service manager about any problems with lifting this truck and as per his email the only thing i would void is suspension. the truck is built to tow 19,000 lbs so them voiding a trans because of tires that add a total of about 400 lbs is pretty weak. the main tuner for the LML's is H&S and i have heard iffy things about them plus the fact that it leaves a "foot print" in the truck that WILL void the warranty should something happen. my main concern warranty is powertrain since everything is so expensive, and that i have a 6 year / 100,000 mile coverage. There might not be 1 person in the entire world to blow a LML, but i'm only worried and care about 1 LML, mine. If someone/anyone would be kind enough to tune it for me and remove all the emissions crap and tell me that they'll pay for a new motor or anything else that craps out related should something happen that GM won't cover then we'd have a deal, but i don't think anyone is willing to make that guarantee.

i'm not worried about a DPF back exhaust, i'm worried about a turbo back exhaust (also illegal). i'm a realist and know that $hit happens. i have a job i have to be at, a house, and a daughter. we only have 2 trucks, so if mine crapped out and wasn't covered i'd be screwed. it's not worth it IMO. i bought the d-max so i'd have plenty of power stock without having to do anything. more power is always better, but with the possible repercussions it's just not worth it to me.

redchevy914x4
12-06-2011, 12:41 PM
on my buddies truck it is the 4th duramax he has bought from the same dealership so he has a very good relationship with the service manager. He lives in an area where he does not have to pass emissions and he still has all the original stuff. He has it in writing that they will still honor his warranty up to a certain extent because all he did was remove the factory emissions stuff and got the basic tune that adds no horsepower or torque. It is just to turn off the check engine light. It all depends on how good of a relationship you have with your dealership as to what they will and will not cover. The service dept has the ability to kind of manipulate the system.

I respect your opinion, I don't agree with it but I respect it. I can totally see where you are coming from! Around here the dealerships all "look the other way" for tunes and exhaust, in fact we do alot of exhaust and tunes for customers that the dealers actually refered to us. If something major were to happen the customer could get pinched because the decission to warranty an item can go over the dealerships head, so for that I can totally see where you are coming from.

i realize that, he must have a REALLY good dealer if they won't bother him about the emissions. in NJ if i was caught by a mobile dmv check point without the emissions crap it would be a 1k ticket AT LEAST as far as i know. thats just not worth it

yup. suspension doesn't bother me (or the dealer). DPF back exhaust and intake don't bother the dealer either, but with all the emissions crap still in place it makes those mods virtually useless. as for the tune the dealer can't do anything about it. if the truck were to have a catastrophic failure gm wants the computer sent to them for testing where they would fine "foot prints from the tune". and if i got rid of the emissions crap and even if the dealer didn't hassle me about it jersey has mobile dmv "spot checks" if i got stopped by them and it failed emissions because i got rid of that crap they could tow the truck and give me fines OVER $1,000. i'd LOVE to do it, i've always wanted a loud dirty diesel, but i have to stick with a quiet clean one lol

I personally hate the new dpf and def requirements on the new trucks. I work on class 8 all day long. The new semis have them too. I recommend keeping as much of the warranty as possible. If it weren't for the doser valve failures or the actual dpf filter going bad we would never see the trucks we sell until further down the road. We see them right about 50-100k for new valves and or dpf filters becuase the regen will not complete. The regens are supposed to burn up all the contaminants but in real life they just burn themselves up or fail all together. The warranty does not cover them becuase there deemed a wearable part however we can get warranty to cover the labor. When they fail and they will fail, have money around to fix it the system isn't cheap to maintain. Ive replaced them after the first regen before with only 1600 miles on the clock. These trucks are nnormally run into the million mile plus range replacing them all the time will surely get tiresome.

ya the new diesel emissions stuff is crazy. That's why if I were to buy a diesel I would most likely buy one that is around an 06-07 that way it doesn't have all that junk on it. But either way, very cool truck man! I can respect leaving it stock for warranty reasons. Especially on such a nice/expensive truck.

Very nice looking truck, and for what it's worth I was told the feds have a $10,000 a day fine for tampering with any part of a DPF exhaust system by the factory reps from International Harvester but that could be because we are considered a DOT carrier. I think it is smart on your part to leave the motor stock to ensure it stays under warranty given the number of warranty claims I have seen with the D-Max trucks in my fleet. Looking forward to seeing the future mods coming up, I know it will look sic when your done, but are we ever really done with any vehicle?:10:

:nono: dealers pay the same for the truck whether it's special ordered or not, you just have to try harder when you are ordering one because they'd rather sell you an older one off the lot, all the same discounts/rules/net costs apply whether the new truck is on the lot or getting ready to be made, assuming they are the same model year

thats odd, all the other appearance packages i've seen the valance (where the tow hooks and license plate goes) is painted the body color not black plastic as that one. let me dig up a pic

but the problem lies in the fact the the promotions are based on the the truck is delievered NOT when it's ordered so that is a gamble PLUS i'd be without a vehicle for 4-6 weeks verses not at all lol

Did the shop that painted your truck paint over the chrome bumpers? I've heard it can work, but it worries me. And beautiful truck BTW! The emisssions make me sad, but I understand your warranty woes.

All the chrome was sandblasted first then prepped and painted. Thanks

don't really post here much anymore.

got rid of the death metal novakanes for stealth novakanes, now i just ordered 20x10 stealth novakanes (20x9 are on now) to give the truck a wider stance. also had the grill repainted because the brace at the edge of the split by the headlights was painted white and should be left black. looking into some performance mods for the next year or so.

Almost went with BMF. Can't wait 6 weeks for their 22x10.5. Had to move on. But absolutely sick wheels and a badass truck!
