I was thinking of something similar, but a single 3 1/2-4" tip flush cut.
Let me clarify, have the pipes come out a 45's with flush cut tips. I hope that makes sense. Almost exactly like you have yours, but have the tips at 45 degrees instead of 90.

here was mine a year or so ago before the mount broke because it hit something.

^^ I like that look but I think it works much better on a RCSB 2wd like yours than my suburban.

well im not 100% on this but on suburbans since all of it is the "passenger cab" then it needs to run out back. maybe it just needs to be exited from under the vehicle but with those tips right there at that door idk if i would want to.

Here is mine, 3"to 4" single wall, drone is not any worse then having it ran out the back like I do now dumped my the bumper.

There is enough room by the door. I will almost be able to tuck it behind the door but not quite. Nobody has their leg that far back when getting in. I checked.

Dang I want side exits now! But I have 2 questions; 1,how bad is the drone? And 2, are they constantly getting in the way or hitting something?
it seems like it would be easy to tear them off

1: It's not bad as long as you don't use blowmasters
2: I haven't hit anything with my tips in the 4 years I've had this setup

1988 GMC, why did you run 3" instead of the stock 2.5"? Also, am I correct to assume you don't have a muffler? If you don't have a muffler, do you have an exhaust video?

Lol, half the reason I am doing it is because I haven't seen in done in my area yet. Everybody that has in front of the tire has two tips on one side.

Stock is 3", he has Dynomax Bullets

That's because the gas tank is on the other side

stock is like 2.75" so 3" is the closest and 2.5" is to small.

And yes I have a single 18" long 3" in/out Dynomax Bullet.
I have a thread somewhere, I' ll find it real quick.

Didn't realize the stock pipe wasn't 2.5". Tank is behind the axle in a suburban.
1988, how much did that cat & muffler open up? How is the sound level in RL? Any current videos? It seems just a tad quite in the videos. I want loud, but not get pulled over multiple times loud.
My last setup, which was on my sierra, was stock manifolds into a 3" I/O magnaflow series 60 cat, which Y'd into 4x16" tips at 45's. That was loud. I never got pulled over in that truck but I got followed a lot and had to avoid police whenever possible. The local fuzz is pretty lenient around here. There are a lot of trucks with exhaust and unfortunately a lot of ricers as well.
This is why I want a cat and muffler setup, a bit quieter than my sierra was, but not by much.

Well keep in mind I run LT's as well but with the cat and the Bullet it is pretty loud on the outside, it is mean and loud but toned. in the cab there is minimal drone at any speed, I made the trip to Carlisle this year with this setup and even driving for 8-10hrs a day it never bothered me, it is much quieter on the inside then outside. IF you are used to running straights with no mufflers then my setup will be at the loudness level you are looking for I would say. I will say that the Bullet being straight through I lost some low end but if you are still going to run stock manifolds then that won't matter to you. I don't have vids now at all and the cops have never so much as looked.

It is $35 and is worth it, helps with tone, velocity, that nasty smell especially if you are going to have it right out next to the door.

I am not too worried about the cost. If I was I wouldn't be spending $100+ on a muffler. I want the sound, and I want to be the only one in the area that has that sound.

if you want a unique sound then take a look at the violator mufflers. almost went with one on my truck but having a 4.3l i felt it would of ended badly. http://www.summitracing.com/search/Brand/Pypes-Performance-Exhaust/Product-Line/Pypes-Violator-Mufflers/?autoview=SKU
if your going to be doing it to both sides it may be easier to get 2 mufflers and have an H pipe after the converters.

Here's my '89 with single 4"x12" Magnaflow slant/rolled edge tip & looking good.Using a Thrush #17660 3" SI/SO which replaced the Original 3" Magnaflow cat back system due to the bottom case rotting out & sounding like CRAP...The tips all I kept.Started to sound like my Stihl chainsaw or a rice rocket Honda=Same thing...
Summit/Flowtech shorty's,3" Magnaflow Hi-Flow cat & Y-pipe,Full 3" exhaust pipe.other mods as well.Love the sound & live with the slight drone.Still a win win relationship.

No offense, but you have a COMPLETELY different motor.
I do like that nobody has the look I have in mind. I really don't want to do this going into winter. I let my truck warm up every morning and it is loud as hell for the neighbors, they had to listen to that all last winter with my sierra. Plus I like these neighbors, they keep to them selves.
