I recently had my pitman arm replaced on my truck by the local garage. I was going to do it myself but found out I had to have a special tool that was over $100 instead of the generic style that was $15. I ended up spending about that to get it replaced but I didn't really figure it would be worth buying the tool only to used it a time or 2 in my life. But now I'm thinking I may need to do some more work to my front end. I was just wondering if anyone had made their own tool. I considered buying the cheaper tool and just making my own bolt for it where the hexed part is between the jaws. Has anyone ever done this before?

I made a tool for doing this very job, still have it around somewhere. Unfortunately I'm going to be away from my shop for a little while but if I remember next time I'm around I'll get a picture of it for ya.

Hey sorry I just realized that the tool I made was for the idler arm, not the pitman arm. I'm pretty sure we just took off the whole steering box and then used a wheel puller on it :dunno:. It's been a couple of years since I did it though so things are a bit fuzzy.

Ya I got to looking at mine today and was wondering about that. Even the more expensive tool you can get doesn't look like it will fit but I'm not sure. We had a dandy set up when we took my idler arm off. We beat on a long punch with a maul held in place by a floor jack while another guy pryed down on it through the fender well. Ingenuity huh? :D

I got the $30 cheapy from napa i think and I've done tons of them. Just unbolt the gear box and lay it on its side pull the arm off. I'll do idler and pitman arms all day they pay great
