the very best thing you can do for a 1008 is to get an o/d trans in there. those engines run great when they are right but those 4.56 gears will wear on you. a fresh 700r4 in your truck will sure make you smile going down the road!

Instead of spending a ton on an OD trans swap, keep the bulletproof TH400 and fit 35s to drop the ratio down enough to cruise.

If your injection pump is in good shape, just buy a set of rebuilt and balanced injectors (local diesel shop should be able to blance the pop pressure on used or your original injectors).

I paid $450 for a set of BNIB Stanadyne 6.5TD injectors because i wanted a good set that i can have rebuilt plenty of times. Not necessary but i wanted that extra piece of mind.

Otherwise, you will have one of the strongest trucks available from the 73-87 body style.

-1.25 ton chassis
-D60 front axle
-14BFF with true detroit locker and 4.56 gears
-6.2/TH400/NP205

You cant ask for a better base truck to start with for a full size rig IMO

I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT TO FIT A 700R4 THE DRIVE GEAR IN THE TRANSFER CASE WILL NEED TO BE CHANGED TO THE SMALLER ONE THAT FITS THE R4 OUTPUT. SORRY. KOOTS IS RIGHT THOUGH, A TALL SET OF TIRES & THE REQUIRED CORRESPONDING WIDE POLISHED ALUMINUM WHEELS (and 4"lift) WILL MAKE DRIVING BETTER ON THE TWO LANE. WE ALL LIVE WAY OUT IN THE COUNTRY HERE & EVEN WAL MART IS 22 MILES AWAY SO I AM ALWAYS IN O/D MODE. I JUST SOLD A 1008 W/ A WORE OUT SET OF 35s & IT WAS OK BUT NO 4 LANE DRIVING FOR IT. I HAVE ONE 1008 LEFT, STILL RUNS & EVERY PANEL (INCLUDING THE ROOF) IS BENT. STILL CAMO TOO. I GOT A 4" LIFT IN THE BARN FOR A SQUARE BODY BUT I DON'T KNOW. GOOD LUCK WITH YOURS!

The transfer case is the NP208.

Regarding the comments about installing a 700r4 I do agree they make the these trucks much nicer on the road as even with 35" tires the 4.56 gears still have the 6.2 wound up pretty fast on the highway. But I also agree with the point of just putting the bigger tires on it, assuming you want bigger tires and the lift. And to verify you would have to either change the input on the 208 or just get a 208 that was mated to the 700r4 to begin with. TH400's had 32 spline output where the 700r4 has a 27 spline version.

the m1008 comes with the np205, the m1009 comes with the np208.

but i was thinking of putting in a nv4500 :rocking:

There's a guy over on dieselplace.com that just put an NV4500 into his M1008 and he seems to enjoy it.

I'd only make the swap for OD and for the sake of rowing your own gears.

Nope, both had the NP208 at least out of the factory. From my understanding only a few rare variants (I think like the M1031) that had a specialty service bodies on them had the 205 in order to have provisions for PTO.

I don't doubt there are M1008's floating around out there with 205's swapped in, but they are 25 year old trucks with the famous GM interchangeability so pretty commone to see non-original parts in them.

Uhh, no. Where are you getting your information from?

Type in "m1008 transfer case" into Google and then spend the next hour reading posts on how it came with the NP208.
