On sound quality, yes, Alpine. But Pioneer isn't far behind, and overall (depending on the head unit) I'd put Pioneer 1st. My AVIC is better than anything Alpine has out there, when you take into account functionality, support, user friendliness, etc. IMO

The new INA-W910 is an extremely nice unit. Ive fooled with both but the alpine appeals to me more. Dont get me wrong though, pioneer's high end stuff is really nice. Just the walmart crap they sell gives them a bad name

DONT buy off of Ebay, even if claimed to be new. My Alpine was a deal, but the faceplate goes out and I have to cycle power when it's cold to work again. Yes, my head unit needs to warm up. That's what I get for trying to save $20. I should've just bought from Crutchfield first..

They had good feedback and it worked fine for a few months... but sure as **** as soon as I loose all recourse the thing starts acting up.

alpine is good, other then needing to buy an imprint to actually get to use all the functions of the EQ

well, im not buying a high dollar stereo, just something better than stock, thats why i wondered who had the best sound quality, so as far as cheaper stereos does the list still remain in that order?

Alpine would be, and is my top choice. Its what I've got in my truck now. Its the same one I had in my Buick, and has been going strong since 2004..

I have had two different Kenwood units and have been very happy, my current has a USB port and has worked great for my setup.

Thanks guys. Ya, i like my factory cd stereo too and wouldnt mind keeping it and adding an amp, sub, and better speakers to it but its going to be more trouble to add rca plugs to it and run even more wires from the radio to amp and back up to speakers, then would need a way to turn on the amp seeing how the factory stereo doesnt have a remote wire. Would just be easier to get an aftermarket stereo with rca plugs and all, even though it will be a while till i can afford one.

what year model is your truck? I know on mine i have a box from PAC that i can run rca's to the stock h/u and it has a remote wire in the harness that you tap in to for the remote

its a 1999 nbs extended cab. What is this box you speak of? I just dont want to have to hack up the trucks wire harness to the radio.
as far as brands on stereos, wondering why you all rate jvc so low on the list? I have a jvc in my car with a sub and amp and it sounds incredible and it is not even a high end stereo..

i have two 12's hooked up with my stock head unit. some sony amps have a high level input and all you have to do is hook the wire that normally goes to the speaker to the high level input on the amp and it turns off and on from the power that goes to the speaker.

I am going to just go with a cheaper new head unit, like 70.00 bux. Jvc, pioneer, and kenwood all have them at this price, so, out of these 3, in this cheap price range, what would you choose? Reason im asking again is because i should have listed the price i was looking at because i know as the price range increases, the ratings on brands can change as stated above about the sony's. But the 3 im looking at are pioneer, jvc, and kenwood. all right around 70.00., so what name would you choose out of those 3 and at that price?

Ive used this box and it works extremely well, its pure plug and play, no splicing the harness:

At that price range I would get which unit you like the button layout and face looks of the best.

Everybody I know with Kenwood has had problems with motorized faceplates, ejecting cd's, or knobs falling off. I'd never buy from them IMO.
So many people here are rating JVC so low, but why? I've had 2 now, and they wont quit. My kd-avx1 has been in 3 different vehicles, over the course of 5 years, plays DVD's, has an input for my backup camera, IPOD interface, and switchable colors, and only ran about 200 bucks. I'll stick with them forever.
Pioneer isn't bad, but the one I had was mediocre as far as the features go. Seemed very no-frills. Granted that was 8-9 years ago.
Alpine is usually pricier, but good.
Sony is sony... Some are ok and work better than most expect, but are still wal-mart quality.
I also say pick which one looks the best to you and is easiest for you to figure out. For that money they are all pretty well the same.
