Well its tuff to try and decide what exhaust to get. I would like something not too loud but not quiet at all. And not too much of a high price. I think true duals may be a little to loud.

What engine have you got? I had a true duel set up with a pair of Thrush mufflers, 2.5" pipe, 4" tips at a local muffler shop installed for $270. Would have been $250 if I would have went with 3" tips. It sounded really throaty and kind of loud. Now though it has long tube headers and no cats so it is REALLY loud and still throaty, but not like it was before.

You cant go wrong with an x pipe. very nice sound. louder that flowmasters but not as loud as straights. Cost about 250-275 . Heres links to my last 2 trucks with x's. It pops like straight pipes when you rev it up but it doesnt pop at all going down the road.

Well it wont let me post links yet so just pm me if you would like to hear it.

If you want a quiet exhaust, go with the best sounding, most raw performance sound that you want.

Then, stick a small glasspack (cherry bomb, round case magnaflow, dynomax bullet, etc.) behind your muffler(s) and you should have a deeper, quieter tone without losing any of that performance sound at full throttle.

I did this to my 97 Civic (LT header, 2.25" exhaust, 14" Magnaflow, 19" cherry bomb glasspack) and once i added the glasspack it went from sounding like a pissed off coffee can of bees to sounding like a mellow street bike. I was very pleased with the results.

Spintech mufflers FTW!

New member, first post. I recently traded my beloved '78 3/4 ton truck for a '97 3/4 ton Suburban with 7.4 454. It's pretty high mileage at 190K and has a slight mis/hesitation. Been searching the HUGE 480 page thread for answers and working on a few things but I do have an exhaust question as well-from what it appears, this rig is pretty stock and I can't help but think opening up the factory exhaust will help this engine a fair amount. Has anybody ran Spintech muffler/s on the 454? What is overall thoughts on them? IF so, how is rest of exhaust setup? I run a Spintech on my Jeep and love it. Thinking I'd like to run duals into single then out back similar to stock, just better flowing setup. If I don't go Spintech with this, it seems Magnaflow is way to go? Not looking for huge sound here, just an overall good performing setup for a DD rig/family hauler/tow vehicle.

Thanks,

Best of Luck,

Mike

The Spintechs on a 454 sound AMAZING. CHeck out youtube for some examples. I have a 6.0L and mine sound great. I love them. If you dont decide to run Spintechs then i would run some Borlas. Either one of those will sound great. The dual in/single out would look and sound very good also. I have 2 Spintech mufflers with dumps before the axle. I hope this helps out a little.

Thanks for the info. I love the spin tech on the Jeep-well, did when it was running right. Working on that now. Sound clips on the computer just don't do these things justice. They had a vid on one of the new camero's with duals and Wow, that was hot! Love to hear it in person. Figured the 454 would sound pretty nice with one.

What is the overall consensus on optimum pipe size for the 454? I can't afford to do headers right now with the darn Jeep down, but will eventually. It appears the stock is 3" all the way out-didn't actually measure it but it looks about that size. Almost hate to ask this regarding cats but with 190K, I'm sure these have room for improvement to say the least. My Jeep has 3 and the third is not monitored so I removed it. The new Burb has 2 cats is that correct? Where are the O2's and are they monitored before and after the cats? Was only under it briefly and didn't see the sensors right off hand. Was thinking of cleaning up the piping from the factory manifold collector back, new pipe either delete the cats or go high-flow of some sort, then the spin tech. Stick with 3" pipe or smaller? I can't see going larger-don't want to start loosing power. This isn't a performance setup, just family hauler and tow rig.

Thanks again!

Best of Luck,

Mike

Your '97 Burb 7.4 should have 3" dual pipe, 2 cats, O2 sensors pre- and post- cat on each pipe. To get rid of the cats you'll also need to tune out the rear O2's or you'll have codes.

Thanks-That's what I was afraid of. So who makes a good high flow cat/s for these with O2 bungs welded in? I can weld them in if need be so I guess it's not that big a deal, would be nice though to just get the parts and burn them in though...

Thanks again!

Mike
