hey guys, i just purchased a 1975 chevy truck with a sbc 400 in it. the top end has been rebuilt by previous owner i dont know how many mile since the rebuild. not sure of cam size but seems mild, and the owner installed an annoying gear drive as well, has a performer intake and an edelbrocl carb. i have never really been a fan of the edelbrock carbs as they tend to bog when hammer is down, and this one does it too but once it opens up and get moving it has some great power.
is there any recomendations to try and pep this carb up or should i look into a different carb like the holley truck avenger?? i have always had good luck with holleys and the old rochester Qjets.
this is for an off road wheeler.... also seeing how its going onto a 400ci sb, would a 650cfm or 750cfm be better suited???
this motor has some serious power in it, it just seems like its being held back or struggling and its seems like it has to do with the carb hesitating.
any advice or suggestions appreciated!

I would get the calibration kit for your carb first and see if you can get it work any better. Edelbrock has the full tuning manual online at their website. 50 bucks on a calibration kit is a lot better than 300 on a new carb.....

yeah i did look at the tuning manual, and tried tuning it. its good on the street but off road it runs rich and stumbles. and it is an older carb as well so im thinking it may need a rebuild anyhow

I vote for a tuning kit. I'm not a fan of quadrajunk carbs, too many issues for me. I just replaced my old QJ with a new edelbrock thunder 650 (qj was beyond rebuild) and I'm pleased as pie. Before you install, tighten both mix screws down and turn them back counter clock wise one quarter turn... basic tune.
