So i had a huge mess trying to find all the information in one place. Now that I have gotten things working I hope to share this information and make things simpler for everyone else.

Some trucks are prewired and some look like they are prewired but arn't

this is the back side of the fuse box under the dash. This is where the adapter harness plugs in.

The arrows are pointing to pins that are NOT wired. One of these is power to the brake controller from Stud #1 the other is the signal line for the trailer brakes.

since my truck doesn't have those pinned I have to run wires from the brake controller into the engine bay.

Lets take a pause and start in the engine bay

This is what your fuse box (with the covers off) should look like.

The red wire on the left side of the picture is a power lead for 12volt Aux power to the trailer. This is for things like charging the batt for break away brakes or trailer lighting. You remove the red fake fuse and drop in a 40 Amp to get them to work.

As you can see on the right side of the picture there is another Stud (#1) this is the fused power for the brake controller. As you can see my truck is not wired for it. SOME TRUCKS will have a wire there and some might have the wire there but not connected.

This is where you run Power too the brake controller off Stud #1.

The blue wire just above the fuse box in the pictures with a single connector is the line for the trailer brake signal to the rear of the truck. again if your lucky and your truck is wired this will be plugged in OR the mate for this connector will be there but not connected.

Cut this connector off and run a wire to the brake controller signal on the brake controller.

This is what my adapter harness ended up looking like

the remaining two wires is a ground and signal from the brake pedal. to my understanding all trucks will at least be wired for those two pins.

I hope this helps someone out and makes things easier. I know I'm a picture person.

PM me questions cause ill forget to check the tread after the first week or two.

I'm also severely dyslexic so I'm sure there will be typos and spelling errors.

Hmmm, never thought of a battery on the trailer for breakaway brakes. Does it mean that I'm a degenerate when the first thing I considered was intentionally making the trailer so the brakes only worked on one wheel, then cutting it loose at high speed on purpose just to watch a trailer do donuts? :D

Seriously, when I saw "DIY trailer brake control" I thought you meant this -> http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/general-discussion/tow-haul-mode/486896-homemade-brake-controller.html
