For sale: truck in sig. (not really, but dammit that's how I'm feeling right now!)

Had the range fork grenade on me last summer, so I replaced parts and got her on the road again. Since then I've only put maybe 1k miles on her. Today while going down hill she started grinding again, same as before. No problems under a load/accelerating, but as soon as I let off the gas and the compression kicks in the damn thing starts grinding away again.

FML.

I'm gonna have to try to find another BW4401 somewhere. Some damn thing is wrong with this one if it's already chewed through another range fork and hub. I'm not even gonna bother tearing this one down. Some other fool can play with it, I'm getting a take-out or rebuilt, depending on what I can find.

OK, i'm officially NEVER rebuilding mine! I read through your thread as you built it and i doubt anyone could have done any better. That sucks.

Yeah no kidding! Rebuilt is looking at $1k+core+shipping. I still have no idea why it's chewing through the fork like that. Of course I'm not an engineer (yet) but straight cut gears shouldn't have any sideloading, dangnabit!!

Have you tried doing anything like taking the front drive shaft off an seeing if the problem goes away?

Grinding on decel only sounds like it could be something caused by the chain if its got some slack in it?

Chain is actually not doing anything in 2wd.

I did talk with my local machinist. He's done a couple engines for me over the years, the kind of guy who knows a LOT about these things. He's thinking it's the case itself. Apparently the shift shaft can wear on the case, allowing the forks to get wonky and do exactly what my truck is doing. He's gonna do some more research and see if there's a fix for the case or if it's gonna requires new case halves. If it needs halves then I'm just buying a new one. Hopefully it's not that bad though!

Well, after talking with a couple rebuilders of t-cases, it's sounding like the fork and hub that I replaced SHOULD have fixed the problem. No sleeves for this model.
On the plus side, I found a take-out from a 2000 GMT-400 with only 47K miles. Price is 600 exchange, but I'm gonna try for a bit less. Still, $600 for one with 47K is far better than most other places that have 'em for $450+ with 100K+ to unknown mileage.

How often do you use 4wd? I just wonder since I've not had any problems with mine since being replaced under warranty when the truck was basically still new. I've got 223K miles on the truck, but I don't use 4wd much.

During the summer I only use it once in a great while. Winter (especially during hunting season) it gets used a fair amount. Probably as high as 10% of total mileage is in 4wd. The screwy thing though is that it's the range system that's boogered, meaning High/Low, not 2wd/4wd. And I might put 5-10miles on in low range over the course of a year. Most of the time it's in high.

I use mine mostly in the winter, too. I rarely use 4-low. If I do, it's typically just because I want to see if it still works, and am screwing around. When I was driving 50 miles to work, I would actually run down the highway in 4-hi, without problems. I'm sorry, you're having troubles with yours.

Thanks. I just have to remember that repairs are still WAY cheaper than payments on a new truck. And honestly this truck has been pretty reliable. If I'd have not been so cheap the first time around and just spent the money to get a newer one or a rebuilt I wouldn't be doing this again. Relying on my uneducated "I can't find anything else wrong with the it" the last time I was inside the t-case was my fault, not really the truck's. I've given and heard the same advice, and this time it's just a bit more of a PITA for me: Do it right the first time or do it again. This time I'm doing it again. ;)

Well, I wouldn't fault a guy for rebuilding a transfercase.

Update: Picked up the takeout with 47k miles on it, talked 'em down to $500 outright, no exchange. Looks good, only a small little bit of seepage around the shifter arm hole, not even enough to worry about. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get it put in later this week.

On a separate note: They have 0411 pcms by the dozens he said, so if anyone want one lemme know. If I had any extra I'd probably get a couple just to have 'em, but that'll have to wait for a few months.

Make sure no case wear (holes), apparently this is common issue, from the 90's even to present day.

Sure, see what he wants for a few 0411's....

My 98 1 ton has this same transfer case. I bought mine used four years ago and luckily mine still works fine with no noise or problems. I only have 104,000 miles on the truck though.

Well I found some shop time today, and the new t-case is in. The swap took about 5 hrs, mostly due to taking my time and also adjusting the rear brakes. Here's hoping I don't need to do this again!

Price he quoted me is $45/ea, and he's got lot's of 'em. The only problem is they are about 2 hrs away.

Definitely not a bad price. And a worthy upgrade to say the least... :)

Whats the benefit of the 411 ECU? I've seen it in the L29 thread but never knew what it meant...Are you selling a L29?

N0DIH

The 0411 is the 2001-2002 Z28/TA/Truck PCM. The 4896 is the 99-00 TA/Z28 PCM (the 4895 is the truck PCM those years).

They are electrically identical.

These PCM's are a major step forward in PCM power, bringing Tow Haul Mode, Dual Octane Timing Tables and a huge host of other tuning improvements to the L29/L30/L31 trucks. People have reported even better idle and better mpg and power. I can see much of that.

PM me for more info on them.

What Tom said.
And no, I'm not really selling the truck. Drove it today and remembered why I like this big beast. :)
