I have a few questions about my trucks exhaust:

Will switching the stock muffler to a better sounding one void my warranty?

I am looking to make the exhaust sound more aggressive, yet not too obnoxious. I am not too concerned about performance gain, but I do not want to hurt the current performance either. What brands and model numbers should I be looking at?

No, a muffler will not void your warranty. Popular brands would be Corsa, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Spintech, Borla, Cherrybomb, Dynatech...there are a ton! The best thing you can do is go on youtube and search out different mufflers on your truck to see what sound YOU like. Also, if you are just looking to swap the muffler and leave everything else teh same, including your tailpipe, I would go talk to the guys at an exhaust shop because they will be the ones welding in the new muffler for you.

Once I find the right muffler, what would be a ballpark estimate on the cost of having the new muffler put on? I don't want to find out later that I overpaid. I don't want to be talked into other sevices and parts I don't need either.

Just welding in a muffler? Maybe $30-$50.

It shouldn't be any more than that and less than an hour of actual work to it. As long as the shop isn't busy it's something you can get done easily.

I just had my Flowmaster cat-back installed on my 98 K3500 and the guy I take it to only charged me $65 but of course I have known him for many years.

but I do not want to hurt the current performance either.

Then you don't want a Flowmaster...IMO it sounds like you want a Magnaflow

I stop off at a small exhaust place yesterday, the owner told me that a Flowmaster is what I wanted. Total cost was going to be $350 for the muffler, the pipe from the muffler to the tail pipe, and a chrome tail pipe. That was more than double what I thought it was going to be. Needless to say, I told him I would have to think about it.

Yeah, they sound better, don't drone in the cab, and don't hurt performance.

I would suggest going to a different shop too...that is wayyyyyyyyyyy too much

Like mentioned before, research the muffler sound you like. Then buy what you like and not what some shop pushed on you.

yea that guy is wanting to break it off in your ass from just installing a muffler, do your research , buy anything other than flowmaster yourself , Amazon is a pretty good place to prices, and take it with you, that way you are paying the mark up from a shop. NEVER buy what the exhaust guy tells you you need to buy far as a muffler, he is in business to make profit, not sell you a great product.

The first quote sounds like they wanted to replace everything, probably from the cat-back. A friend of mine just had the stock muffler replaced with one of the imitation Flowmasters for around $75. That was keeping all of the stock pipes and just welding in the different muffler.

I talked to another place that told me $120-$150 depending on what muffler I decide on. It includes a muffler and installation. The place was to busy to have it done today, so I have to go back.

Any opinions on a turn down?

On my 03 4.8 i started with a Magnaflow 3" in dual 2-1/2 out muffler that was quiet at idle, sounded like glass packs at WOT and droned like hell in the 1800-2000 rpm mode ( Overpriced shiny glasspack). I switched to a Flowmaster 50 series that was loud at idle, load at WOT and only had a slight drone in the 1800-2000 rpm mode. I now have a Goerlich Xlerator part number XS2588 ( about the same size as a Flomaster 70 series). I purchased from www.performance-curve.com for half the price of the Flowmaster or Magnaflow. It's made from stainless, sounds great at idle, loud and great at WOT and does not drone. According to the website www.apexhaust.com they flow about 98 percent of a straight pipe. I then removed the Flowmaster 50's from my 1970 Olds 442 and replaced them with the Goerlich Xlererator's and love it. Search " Goerlich Xcelerator" on you tube for some sounds. Remember, the shorter the case the louder the sound. I purchased the muffler online and had a local shop install with dual 2-1/2 tailpipes with stainless tips for 175.00 Good luck!!

I think I am 75% sold on Magnaflow now. From the videos I watched, they sound good. All the reviews I read the past week, there were more positives than negatives and it fit the description I wanted.

Don't get turn downs if you don't want your exhaust to resonate in your cab, unless you run the pipe over the axle.

id agree with this..turn downs make the sound resonate between the ground and the bottom of the bed..if you want quiet idle sounds, then leave it stock exit or take it straight out back

I had the Magnaflow muffler installed for $130. I am not quite sure how I like it yet. I need to drive it around more and try to listen to it.

Did you just have the muffler replaced and left everything else stock ?

If you think its too quiet, give the packing some time to break in and it will get a little louder
