45's behind the rear w/ tips is my vote. That's what I'm going to do myself.

Dumped at the bumper, imo. I hate the look of tips.

I like them behind the wheels, but tend to avoid big chrome tips.

Mine are like the ones in the first pic, almost the same set up (4" tips). I love mine.

I would say straight out the back or dumped behind the bumper. I think I am gonna go for dumped behind the bumper on my new truck.

i prefer no tips at all. i have mine dumped 14" past the muffler before the rear axle. but if i had to choose between rear or side i would say side with the exhaust going throught the body with the chrome body exhaust kits.

If you have ever met the guy with the dumps at his bumper you prolly wouldn't want to do anything to your truck that he has done to his. That being said I had my 98 dumped at the bumper and liked it a lot.

When I got my exhaust re-done, I decided to go with what we call 4" turn downs. I had them going straight out he back and when they started rusting and getting holes in them from rocks, it looked terrible. I really love the way my tips look, they dont stick out, but you can see them if you stand back.
Excuse the extremely dirty undercarriage, it has since been cleaned. But this is how I had my tips done:

I don't like tips. Duals aren't important to me any more, either. I'd rather have a big single coming from the muffler. If I were to have duals, I think I'd want them exiting the same side, or out the back and angled down. Through the body looks pretty cool on a street truck, too.
My truck is mostly stock, except for the oil and filter, so I wouldn't pay me a whole lot of attention, Though :-)

The point of a tip is to dress up the exposed termination of the exhaust system's tailpipe. Only the outer edge of the tip should be visible unless you're looking at the vehicle from some angle other than how it rests. It is considered a great job if a custom exhaust job has the tailpipes themselves and majority of the tips tucked away out of sight. That takes skill with bending and/or fabbing, and should be appreciated as functional and visually appealing workmanship.
The 45's with slash cuts on the green truck look great. Big and beefy just like the truck, and the end of the tips are all you can see...pipes tucked nicely.
The blue truck is great. Always appreciate what you can hear but not see.
Some trucks look best with exits on either side of the spare, straight out the back...or as mentioned tricked through the body somehow. There's no one right way. Post a pic of your truck.

My vote is for the tucked/turned down at the bumper. The 45 at the rear with big slash cut tips is not just a little over played in the land of cheese, it's WAY overplayed. Time to be a bit different out there in WI.

Can I give a +10? ....... +1 just doesn't seem to to it, for me, on this one.
What's really great is when they start to shake like they're going to fall off.

Thanks to all who have posted! heres a couple pics of my truck if it helps. Thought maybe the dumped would be better just for a cleaner appearance. also dont mind the hanging hitch im going to remove it or get one that sits flush.

I've been told that dumping them before the rear axle (under the cab) results in a noisy interior and droning. I'm not sure if that applies on trucks though; there's a lot of space under there, compared to a car.

Personally I have always liked the look of exhaust tips, to a certain point. The dumped idea I think maybe looks better on a lowered truck, but otherwise I still prefer dual tips, just not too big! I've got mine at the 45 degree angle, have had em done straight out the back as well. I wouldn't worry if they are "played out" get what makes ya happy and what you like! :)

I don't mind seeing it, I just don't want it in your face obvious. If it's completely hidden the exhaust is going to be coming up through the bumper or bed, when at a stop, which I don't like. ........ Although the old Vette (drag/show car) I saw years ago that had 4" pipes dumped before the axle was pretty cool....... it was blowing stones on the pavement around :-)

Okay guys well I got the exhaust put on today. I still need to remove the hitch tomorrow but heres what it looks like. I really like how it looks but the 50 series flowmaster is quiet as hell...im not exaggerating either i had to make sure the guy didnt put my stock muffler back on haha I dont really understand why because my friend has the same muffler on his truck with stock cats and is way louder. Im thinking about just leaving it until redo the exhaust from the engine to the muffler. That would make it louder right?? Heres how it turned out.

Oh thanks im getting rid of that gap problem tomorrow. Cant tell in the pic but my dumps hide behind the shackles in the rear so you cant see it from the side. To each their own on the white gmc though lol
the exhuast on the white truck looks very sloppily done.

I can't seem them very well in the picture...... which is a good thing, I think if that's the way they look in person.
What's the dent in your tailgate from? I've got a similar one right underneath the handle......... I was hooking up a tongue high trailer and go to close :-(

Yeah the guy did a great job hiding them. I told him to make it as out of sight as possible. Still kinda mad it sounds stock tho. And Im not sure what the dents from. It was like that when I bought it along with the bent bumper :(

The 50's are not loud mufflers. You don't need to re-do your entire exhaust, you just need to find someone that "wants" your 50's. Then buy something nice instead.

I like how that turned out. Also happy to see that the consensus is moving towards the more "heard and not seen" approach to exhaust. I remember my first chrome tip setup for my first vehicle being ridiculously cheap compared to what all these exhaust tip manufacturers want for these chrome tips these days. I say cut the excess and costs out and go creative, which is what you did and it's well done and complimenting to your particular truck look.
Sorry you went with a Flow. I would have pushed you towards Spintech if you dig the chambered muffler sound. I know it defies logic, but give that muffler a tank of gas before you decide it's too quiet. I thought the same thing with my past two setups (Spintech and now Corsa) and neither have sound deadening material in them to break-in or wear out and both setups got noticeably louder after a few hundred miles. So, maybe your Flow 50 will improve in volume and tone soon. If not, don't hesitate to simply swap that muffler out for something better.

hmm I hadnt thought of that.. you might be right. It was just put on today and hasnt even finished burning the paint n oil out of the inside so its a good possibility. Ive already done the 40 series before on my old truck and it got incredibly annoying. I never thought of those companies when i was considering mufflers. If it doesnt get a better tone here in the next month il look into different mufflers. I wanted to go quiet but want it to be noticable that ive got exhaust atleast haha

Would turndowns change the sound? Would it sound better or worse? Contemplating cutting it off behind the mufflers and adding turndowns... Haha
Don't know if it'll make it sound bad or not. Not like flowmasters sound awesome as it is.. but I don't want to make it worse

where do yall have them turn down at? I was thinking behind the mufflers.. maybe 4-5 inches.
Doober
01-06-2012, 01:00 AM
If you dump it under the bed, there will be drone. I had a Delta Flow 40 on my old '88 with a stock 350 and no cat (manifolds), it was ridiculous inside the cab. Sounded good and deep outside, but the drone gets old quick. I have a Pypes single 3" offset/center muffler and the only time there is resonance is acceleration around 2k rpm. Down the road I'm considering a set of longtubes with dual cats, an x-pipe and true duals exiting in front of the right rear tire... that or something similar to what I already have, just with two tips (not going with shiny stuff again, my current tip has split at the bottom).

I wanted to get a setup like this, but the downward angle I wanted wasn't possible because of the frame.

Mines dumped right at the rear axle... so maybe 10-11 inches of pipe...
Not that it would matter
