So some of you have seen my 84 k10 but anyway im going to start rebuilding it again but this time im going to take my time and do it the way i wanted too to begin with.
I went and looked at a frame today and it is in a heck of alot better condition than mine is so im going this weekend to pick it up. It has a cab and half ton axles on it also but ill try and sell the axles and prob sell the cab even though it is a little better than my cab.
Anyway the reason behind all this is we were out messing around in my truck and we ended up getting stuck in a mud whole well i dont know why but that made me decide to tear my truck apart and rebuild it.
Here is what it looked like when i thought i might be done.

I still havent fully decided what i want to do yet it just depends on what kind of deals i come across but im thinking:
3/4 or 1ton axles
8in lift
and make it more of a mud/woods friendly truck i know the 8in lift prob seems like a little much but most of the places we go arent to bad just a lot of mud.

Got a little more torn off my truck but im waiting to get some more parts before i go doing any more.
Anyway here is the truck im going to pick up this weekend for $250 the frame is pretty nice just has surface rust and the cab is actually not that bad just one little hole on driver side floor. It has half ton axles which ill try and sell if not they will go to scrap.
I also found a 14bolt full floater and i think i got a heck of a deal on it guy wants 40$ so im going to pick that up also as soon as i can.
Sorry about the crappy pictures i didnt take them they were sent to me.

Ya i know, haha but those are the pics the guy sent me because he asked how to tell the difference i said it would be shaped like that and have a 10.5in ring gear so i guess he checked both just to make sure.

Last night just wasnt my night. I did end up getting the truck but it barley fit between the wheel wells.
We blew a tire on the way home, We were able to limp it home and change the tire. So now i owe the person i borrowed the trailer off of a tire and two trailer lights becasue it blew both lights off the left fender.
Ill post some pics of the truck later.

Ok so right now the plan is to just keep the frame and front bumper and glass out of the cab off of this truck the rest of it will be going to scrap.
I was really not planning on snow yet so thats going to make the next couple weeks interesting if it sticks, we got a lot more as of now because i took these pictures this morning.
The plan is to still pic up the rear axle this weekend and i need to find a front axle and decided what kind of leaf spings i am going to use.

Picked my axle up yesterday and also talked to a buddy of mine and found out he has some dana 60s and some 40in tires he would make me a deal on. Wish i had the money for them right now but he always has a lot of parts so i dont think that would be a problem.
The next things i need to get are the DIY4X b52 kit and shakle flip along with finding springs.

Did a little more today. Pulled the dash pad and gauges out of the 86(new truck) also removed the bumper and old exhaust. I decided im going to keep the cab off of this truck to reuse because its really not in that bad of shape but does need rockers and cab corners and i already have rockers just need to get cab corners.

We pulled my 208 t-case out of the black truck today for the guy who gave me the 205. But i never even thought of the tail shafts in the trans being different because mine is newer well ya its different. But he said he will trade me trans also so i just gotta pull mine out. I planned on pulling my motor and trans this weekend, i gotta get an engine lift off a buddy of mine. But then im going to get some stuff ready to go into scrap.
I didnt post pics of the 205 yet so here they are. I plan on cleaning it up and painting it some time soon im also kicking around the idea of converting it to twin stick.

Pulled the grill, lights, inner fenders, battery, rad. overflow, and battery tray today. I didn't work real long didn't want to do any more because i didn't have the engine lift and didn't want it to get rained or snowed on to make it a big PITA to work on tomorrow.
I just went and picked up the engine lift so tomorrow i plan on pulling the motor and trans.

Today i pulled the fenders, core support, and rad.
The unplugged all the wires and unbolted the motor and pulled it.
Took the trans off and took it to my buddy so i could get the one i needed for the np205 but i kept my clutch since its only a few months old.

Haven't been able to get much done lately its been snowing and raining and cant make up its mind on what it wants to do. Only thing i got done today was pulling the glass out of the new truck then it started raining, i figure since the glass is good i might as well keep it.

So it wasnt raining today and the ground was froze up for a little bit figured i would pull the cab off.
The frame is a little nicer than i even first thought the only problem though is the rear crossmember that the cab mounts too the one side is rotted enough that it didnt do anything but im looking for a good one now.

Didnt have much to do today and it was pretty nice but i got the cab off the 86 frame and moved my 14bolt in the garage and pulled the drums off. The plan for it is to keep the 4.10 gears get a locker, and the drums are not in real bad shape so ill prob turn them down on a brake lathe make sure there true and just throw some new pads and hardware on. It already has brand new wheel cylinders from before i bought it.
Id like to do disk brakes but i figure if i can get away with something that still works good and is pretty cheap i will do that if i feel the need for disks later on i can always upgrade.

Rest in pieces 84. The rest of it rolled away on a buddies flatbed today. Im going sometime this week to look at dana 60s he said he has a dodge one with 4.10s he would sell me but also has a GM one which is the one i will probably get because i was reading about the dodge d60s and they need some modifications to fit properly so i would rather choose bolt on over changing things.

I do have one question though my rear has 4.11s in it now and im debating on keeping them or going to a 4.56. The truck will not be driven on the road very much, just occasionally but when it is i would still like to be able to do 70 or so down the highway. I will be running an sm465 backed by an np205 so what are your guys opinions, i would like to sort that out before i get lockers because the 4.11 and down and the 4.56 and up lockers are not interchangeable.

Anyway i will also probably be ordering my rear shackles and front spring mounts from DIY4X soon.

you just have to run thick gut gears on the stock carrier. BTW the disc brake conversion is the way to go, you can pay for the calipers with the drum scrap itself.

That was my thought but i want to get everything together and make sure everything is good and since i can throw the drums on a lathe for free i wouldnt have much in it to make it good for now. Then when everything is together and good i will go back and do disks because its a pretty easy swap.

Good choice on the B52 kit. I have it on my '81 and they are some high quality pieces. Don't forget you're going to need crossover steering, good bump stops and limiting straps, long travel driveshaft, long brake lines, etc...

I planed on doing crossover when i get there, will prob end up with custom driveshafts and im not sure what i want to do for brake lines yet but i know they will all get replaced.

Well today i sandblasted the trans and t-case. It didnt really turn out that great the cheapo craftsman sandblaster just didnt have enough guts to get all the stuff off, i think if i would have sprayed some degreaser on it the last couple days and washed it first it would have worked but its done now.
And i cleaned up the silver overspray that was everywhere after these pics so black is where it should be and so is the silver.

Alright well he wasnt sure what this had in it, he kept trying to sell me a dodge one and i told him ill take your GM one instead, pretty sure this was the only GM d60 he had but its mine now, I still havent decided on what gears i want to run if this has 4.10 i might keep them for a while but i have been looking into the 4.56 and 4.88 because the truck wont get run on the road very much and with a 4.56 I still think it would hold highway speed, well 55-70

It warmed up a little bit the last couple days so i was able to clean the D60.

When i was pulling the diff cover off i cleaned the ratio tag and saw that it should have 4.10s in it
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/84%20chevy%20k10/2012-02-15_16-18-53_449.jpg
I continued to pull the diff cover off and what i found wasn't what i was hoping for, some nasty looking oil and a good bit of water and ice. I come to find out that the pinion seal is leaking which is still not a real big deal.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/84%20chevy%20k10/2012-02-15_14-48-08_183.jpg
So now this axle is going to get torn down and cleaned really good both inside and out along with a nice sandblast and paint, for now im keeping the 4.10s in the front rear and not going to lock it, If i like the ratio ill put lockers front and rear if not ill change gears then do lockers, but plans for the D60 are all new brakes, clean, paint, Crossover steering and replace necessary things.

Sorry guys been pretty slow lately, i haven't been able to order any parts yet and haven't been able to get much done lately because of the weather its either raining or snowing.
But today i was able to cut my brake drums and surprisingly they were not that bad, after knocking some of the crusty stuff off the outside edge it only took two cuts and they were good.

PaRedneckRiders
02-29-2012, 06:18 PM
I know i just cut my drums but i was looking at parts i need to order and i decided to look at the rear disk brake conversion again for the 14bolt. Well this is the way i have decided to go now, ill just order the brake brackets along with my other parts that i have to order from DIY4X at the same time. I would have another 50$ or more into shoes and hardware, and its not all that much for calipers and disks so i figure its a win win win, ill have better braking power something easier to service and something lighter.

PaRedneckRiders
03-08-2012, 06:16 PM
Okay so today i ordered some of my parts from diy4x, i ordered my disk brake brackets for the 14bolt a B52 kit for the front and a rear shackle flip. Not sure when the parts will get here but I'm really anxious to see them I've heard nothing but good things about diy4x and their products.

So the other day i picked up another 14 bolt ff, i got this one for 20$ Today i stripped it of everything and kept anything thats worth anything. I just really wanted the hubs off the drums for when i do disk brakes but i also kept the ring and pinion the axle shafts and the adjusters for inside, pretty much everything that was good.
The housing itself is not in bad shape but i have no use for another one right now so ill just throw it in the scrap pile.

Also my friend has a 2wd auto at his house which the cab is decent on he is tearing it all apart he said i can have the cab for some of the parts i have that he wants and i dont so im getting a practically free cab that i will be able to use. Im going to replace the rockers cause i already have new ones and the cab corners arent that great but everything else isn't bad, ill just have to cut the floor and make a new tunnel for a manual 4x4.

Got the front axle and springs off today, now im going to get the frame up off the ground get the old brackets off then probably going to have the frame sandblasted and primed, im not sure what i want to paint the frame with yet, i was sort of leaning toward POR-15 but im not 100% sure yet.
Ignore all the junk on the frame right now, thats where i threw stuff when i was cleaning up so it wasn't in the way as much.

Got my new brackets all painted up, but dont have any pics. I just sprayed them with primer and then brushed the paint on and imo i dont like the look of them because the paint was brushed, I'm just going to deal with it because at the moment i dont have a spray gun that works.
Also today i picked up my cab from a buddies house, I'm also getting some other parts from him soon. The cab was pretty much free, i traded him a bumper for the cab and gave him a stock half ton open diff axle for all the other parts.
The cab need a little attention on the driver floor both rockers and cab corners. but theres no holes rotted through the floor and i already have new rockers. The underside of the cab is surprisingly nice.

So the other day my buddy gave me a free hood, it wasn't in the greatest shape had some dents scratches and some rust but the dents are where they could be pounded out and the rust is not that bad.
So i got a little bored and had some down time i figured why not take some measurement and see what a cowl hood would look like.
After taking some measurements i said what the heck its a free hood, ill give it a shot.
Well this is where im at right now with it.

I havent really decided what to do about the sides, or what to do to fill in the space in the back yet but ill think of something.

When you fill the sides in, put the sheetmetal at a slight angle. It will look much better than a 90 degree angle.

I have seen hood like you are talking about before, but i personally never liked them. I was going to do straight sheet metal and then glass the bottom so it doesn't have any sharp corners and all is smooth.

Sorry guys, the build has been really slow lately. I had a lot of stuff planned to get done but started other things and didnt do any of it yet. Today i cut the front spring mount brackets off my frame, and tomorrow im probably going to get the rear shackles cut off, i also still have to take the 4x4 steering box off and might as well throw it in the scrap pile because i need a 2wd one to run crossover steering.
Also i got my dana 60 all torn down just didnt post any pictures of it, i really need to start ordering some parts for that but want to get some other stuff first.
I sorta set the hood on the back burner for now because i haven't done anything to it yet and its not real high on my list of things that need done.
And yes i know my frame is upside down right now ha.

So in the last few days i was able to get the rear brackets off.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/84%20chevy%20k10/2012-04-14_09-53-59_209.jpg
Got the frame cleaned some then primed and painted.

Then i got my new brackets on from Diy4x.I also decided to ditch the stacked coolers as a frame stand because there were a few times that it almost fell.

Overall i really liked the new brackets i just had one problem with them, the center holes on the backing plates. The front spring mounts lined up perfect with the frame but the plate that u bolt the part to did not line up with the holes on the frame/bracket. I may go back and oblong the hole with a drill enough that i can get it bolted in because both sides are like this but i dont think it will be that big of a deal.
Overall i will be buying from them again and am very happy with the parts i received.

Today i decided to look for the leaf springs i need, and i found a few different things but not really sure what springs i want to run.
I know what springs i need just dont know who i should get them from and what would be the best.
Option 1
A set of 52" rear springs for the front, and a set of 56" rears for the rear although im not sure if they would sell just the springs.
http://www.roughcountry.com/chevy_4wd_77-87_4.html
Option 2
52" fronts and 56" rears part numbers 19470 and 19471 under rear springs for chevy/gmc
http://www.tuffcountry.com/products/leaf-springs.html Im not too sure about running 6 leafs front and rear though, i think that would end up being to stiff.

Option 3
Lift springs from skyjacker, Im pretty sure i would need the CR14S springs and the CR24S springs but again i think they might be too stiff.
What do you guys think i should do, i considered looking into custom springs through a company like alcan but not sure if i really even want to price them, i started out looking for used lift springs locally but sorta gave up because i have yet to find anything i was looking for.

Also need some opinions on what to do with the D60 front. I really want to put a locker in it but dont want to run a full locker. I plan on running a Detroit in the rear but still not sure what to do with the front, i was looking into the selectable lockers like the Eaton e-locker or even an ARB air-locker but not really sure if its worth dropping that much money on it. I really like the look of this (http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-T_locker/) but can not find any info at all about it so im sorta lost on what to do with the front end at this point.
Just need some opinions from people that have run this stuff in the past, what do you think i should do and why.

I have 4" lift 56's on the front of my '81 and they are super soft. I'm pretty sure they're Skyjacker's.

Do you like them, Im not looking to really flex the truck out but plan to have it on some twisty trails on the way to the mud holes. And with me running only 52" that should make a difference.

Got the dash, steering column, and glass out of the cab today. Really havent decided what i want to do with the cab yet, i know im going to use this cab but i am considering building a roll cage just not sure if i want to yet.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/84%20chevy%20k10/2012-04-30_18-51-27_895.jpg
Also another little update, the dana 60 is bare now, and i think i have made the decision to not run a locker in the front, i would really like to but at this point in time cant really see dropping 800-1100 on a selectable front locker when the truck is not together yet. After the truck is all together and running and if i still think i need it then ill worry about it then.

The build has still been pretty slow lately but i guess i have enough going on for an update.
I got the glass in the cab for now the windshield is just sitting in it because its cracked and im going to get a new one.

Today i went and got some parts for the 14 bolt the only other thing i need is wheel studs because no one has them they all had to order them so now this is what it looks like.

Went and picked up the rest of my wheel studs today, i got 7 yesterday and they ordered another box of them and they came in today.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/84%20chevy%20k10/2012-06-20_20-54-21_719.jpg
Part number 610-228 they are shorter of the two version which should work good with a steel wheel, the other stud number is 610-301 which could be used with thicker aluminum wheels.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/84%20chevy%20k10/2012-06-20_20-54-30_635.jpg
I also picked up a new set of weaver gold pads while i was there and they even had axle flange seals on stock, surprising because no other place carries them and they didn't think they could get them.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/84%20chevy%20k10/2012-06-20_20-54-45_978.jpg
Here it is all together, i only have pictures of this side but the other side looks the same.

I dont have it completely together, i just have it so i can get it under the truck and roll it around. I just have one spindle nut one for now because i will have to pull the shafts again to put in a locker.
Thats it for now the next thing on the list is new leaf springs and possibly this http://offroaddesign.com/catalog/FUSH.htm but it might be a few weeks until i order this.

Okay so i guess i can start back into this build again.
But plans have changed a good bit, ill sort of explain it as i go.
So a few months ago i bought an 82 GMC that i was going to just run around and not do anything too, but now its getting torn apart.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/82%20gmc/2012-10-02_17-22-10_750.jpg
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/82%20gmc/2012-10-02_17-22-44_438.jpg

Anyway the plan now is the take this cab and put on my shortbed frame.
I will take the rear leaf springs from the longbed and put them on my disk brake 14b and still use it on the shortbed frame.
The white truck has a d44 front axle which i will use under my shortbed now.
So i believe before i was going to have 8-9" of lift and now im looking a 4-5".
For now i am going to run one of my 350s with a sm465 and np205 (same plan as before) But in the future i want to replace that with a BBC and probably a th400.
As for the Dana 60 and some of the other parts that were supposed to be going on this project they will now be going on the 82 longbed frame to begin another project, but it will be a while till i start doing anything with that project.

Got the bed off and sold it to a friend of mine.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/82%20gmc/2012-10-15_16-41-37_116.jpg
Also got the motor out and started tearing it apart. This was the 355 that was originally in my shortbed truck then i put in this truck, oil pressure was starting to get low and she just doesnt run as good as it used to but its deffinitly taken a beating. Probably going to rebuild it and use for another project but not sure since its just a two bolt main block.

Got a little more done today. Learned a few things also.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz72/PaRedneckRiders/82%20gmc/2012-10-22_16-07-50_96.jpg
Axle, leaf springs, and rear driveshaft are out.
Anyway i thought that almost all if not all longbeds came from the factory with 56" long rear springs, guess not. Anyway i pulled the springs out without ever measuring them put new bushings in them and put them on the back of my shortbed frame and the shackle angle was completely horrible. I then decided to measure the springs and found out that they were only 52" long and not the 56" springs that i needed. In the end i guess it works out though because i can use these 52" springs in the front since i already have them instead of running 56" springs on all four corners like i was going too.
