That should wake the old truck up if you can get the tune right.

Tuning will be an issue, I'd put an L29 in there and help it out by porting the heads and a BlackBear tune. Keep it GM.
Cheaper to get an L29, MILDLY cam it, get the heads worked over, port the L29 intake to match.
You need to wire in 8 injector connector from the original L31 harness, but that isn't too bad imo.
Just my personal preference, but I'd rather run a big block if your gonna be pulling that much. I'm saying that from the reliability aspect...the BB is designed to be run heavy. Don't need to stroke and run a bunch of suped-up parts to get the power, the BBC has all that built into it. just my $.02
Crew cab short bed OBSs are awesome trucks, wish I had one

ANother thing about that small block you're looking at..
It cranks out some serious HP, I doubt the stock fueling system (spider poppet system) can support that much HP.
L29 uses normal injectors, upgradeable, etc.
somthing to consider
-edit
of course, there is the marine intake if you want to run normal injectors on the L31,
I still say go L29

If you could find a donor truck in a yard somewhere, it would be the way to go. Grab the radiator, oil cooler lines, tranny cooler lines, accessory brackets, etc, etc. AIr cleaner, etc, etc, you get the point
I almost considered dropping an L29 into my Tahoe, but the L31 runs pretty good for what I ask of it

The L29 with a tune will put a smile on your face

If you can get enough fuel to it. Could get expensive.

Just a side note, my buddy has a 2-door Tahoe with a 489 BBC with vortec 454 heads mildly ported, a mild cam, and a so-so tune and it is amazing.
It's still TBI..I'm trying to convince him to swap on the L29 intake that he has sitting on his shelf...
My point is just that by swapping in an extremely mild cam and a little head work the BBC is amazing. THe largest hurdle to stock Vortec 454s is the tune... it's de-tuned on purpose to increase reliability. These went into work trucks, plow trucks, etc... trucks that get beat on.

ya, fuel would be bad but it would be bad with any rig towing 9000 lbs.
THe 454 Vortec would be great...the intake is designed to give boo-koo torque where you need it, down low. Kind of like a TPI setup, doesn't really run great at high RPM but down low, where the runners and heads work together, it shines. 454 Vortec aren't meant to be high-rpm runners... perfect for your app, bro

This is not a bolt in, tune, and go. You will pay $eriou$ coin to feed fuel to that engine.

This being a world with people who have bottomless pockets, I would say Duramax...
but that 454 can pull, man. Just takes a bit of tweaking

Fuel pump, yes. Computer would have to be tuned for the 454. The 454 also uses normal injectors that can be upgraded..mine has Ls1 injectors in it now.

Your tuner guy should be able to re-flash your PCM with the right stuff. Don't quote me on that, but that isn't a big hurdle...Black box vortec PCMs are a dime a dozen. As far as the fuel pump thing, I would just drop the 100 bucks and put a Walbro in there. But yes, on a stock Vortec 454 engine your fuel pump is good to go.
The knock modules in the PCM might be different from L31 to L29, but if you grab a L29 PCM that was attached to a 4L80 you should be good to go. YOur tuner should know all of that, tho

Don't forget about all the emissions stuff...evap canister, all those lines, etc. Smog crap, etc, etc. I can't recall if they are the same from L31 to L29, I doubt it, so find a donor truck and rape and pillage that puppy

I almost bought an L29 with about 80k it off of craigslist for 750. complete, with accessories, everything. Just look around, man.
you should be able to get away for about 2 grand, maybe 2500. Exhaust, tuning, everything.

you could rebuild it yourself, prolly cost a grand in parts. I'm not a BBC expert, tho.
Swaps are expensive, man. Any way you cut it...
