you want a good 3500cfm to cool a v8 and more near 4000cfm if you want ac also. the 3 ways most people go is with a LS1/LT1 fan that fits over a 28" rad, a ford taurus/mark VIII fan that fits over a 28" rad and is also 2 speed but sucks a lot of amps, or upgrade to a 05 rad and fans that should be close to stock fit.

Flexalite makes a dual electric fan, I can get one at a local parts store for $450, not sure what the cfm is though

Jesus thats some serious cash for a fan!
Either go with the Mark VIII fan, or go grab a LS1 setup out of a junkyard.

dont do that, you can have 2 ls1 fans and a controller for half that. Go to the junkyard or search ebay!

Can you program the ecm to turn the fans on and off? or do you need its own controller?
I would be interested in doing this to my 8.1

The ECM can be enabled to turn on one or two electric fans. The PCM provides the ground trigger for the fan relay/relays.

You can have the ECM do it, or buy a separate controller

I bought a new 34 inch two row core radiator from radiator express and new Dorman 07+ fans for mine. I had about 425-450 in everything including the harness from Black Bear. The LS1 fans do work but they are not a direct bolt on and do not look stock, original, and clean IMO. There was more than one day I let mine set and idle in the 110+ degree heat with the AC going full tilt blowing 38 degree air and the engine never got over 200 degrees and thats with the fans running on low. The 34 inch fans move a TON of air.
On my 95 its got a fan shroud off a 2007 Tahoe and it had Jeep Grand Cherokee fan motors (direct bolt in but not as much power) and a 5 and 7 blade fans. Because of the engine I'm going with I decided to finally improve on this. I bought the genuine GM fan motors for it, the parts catalog lists them as 700 watts but that doesn't make any sense but its an upgrade over the rated 500 watt motors, and 9 blade fans. I fully anticipate freezing my frijoles off even if I set and idle in the middle of death valley during a heat wave.
