has anyone ever used a diesel cluster in a gas truck? i plan on swapping my 97 1500 with a cummins 4bta next year, and defiantly "HAVE' to have the cluster say diesel fuel only lol. but was wondering for the time being if the tachomter will work properly and be accurate. even though it only sweeps to 5k rpms, not like i'm ever up there.

There is more to the cluster than just the "Diesel Fuel Only" markings. The Gas tach will not read right as the computer sends a different pulse to control the tach on the gas engine than on the diesel engine. If you are doing the gas to diesel convert you may as well just do the whole thing and get the correct cluster.

Does the tach not use the alternator for it's source. I know on a burb duramax swap that Ferminator did, he used the alternator from the 95 6.5 on the 6.6 to retain his stock dash. I'd assume that if the part # is the same(which it is-on rock auto) for the diesel and gas, it should work, unless things changed from 95 to 97(which it could have)

I will be tackling this as well soon enough, but I am putting a 6BT in mine. Going to swap over to a 95 interior and hopefully run a diesel cluster as well. I figure I will at least need to change the tach resistor to a V6 one (to match the inline 6). Wiring diagrams will definitely be your friend. If worse comes to worse, you can always pick up a bracket kit to mount a 6.5L alternator on your 4BT to run the tach.
