I have been contemplating an engine swap for a couple of years now. I have a 92 Silverado Z71. It has following mods

4:10 gears & Trutrac - 10 bolt (looking to upgrade to 14 bolt rear)
700R4 trans - shift kit, corvette servo, 2500 stall converter, fresh rebuild
4" susp lift with 34s

This is my daily driver and I am looking something reliable and efficient with around 400 horses for the weekend when I like to play a little:cool:

I have read and searched this forum and others but dont yet know what I want to do.

Here are my options

Crate 355 Vortec heads
Crate 383 (Mild)
build current motor add Vortec heads
6.0 LQ9 Swap
5.3 Swap (doubtful)
Any other suggestions?

Currently getting around 11.5 to 12 mpg, Id love to see 15 average, think its possible?

As far as fuel delivery goes. Ive looked at keeping the TBI, Converting to Multiport injection (Edelbrock), or 6.0 Factory
I know the TBI is good for 400hp but how efficient would it be? Much more MPG out of Multiport?

Main reason Im leaning toward a vortec 350-355 build so far is that I have just rebuilt the trans less than 5,000 miles ago (Not by choice).

I would love opinions, suggestions, comparisons. Any MPG estimates?

bang for buck go with a 5.3 the 5.3s are cheap and a camshaft headers and a tune you have plenty of power. Call local salvage yards they do not sell 5.3s they never go bad so the price will be right

5.3 won`t give you the TQ you need 383 and stick with the TBI for that low end TQ to turn those tires easily in the bush.

that "missing" low end torque can be dealt with by means of a low duration cam with low lift or a decent sized stall converter. Just food for thought

if you are looking for better fuel mileage do the 5.3 swap.
