Hello,
new member. Trying to solve an argument. Been looking for a 454 SS cluster to put into my 92 Silverado with the Tach option. I feel like it should be a plug and play operation but a friend says it would require using a tech2 to reprogram the DRAC or computer to accept the different speedo.
Thoughts, opinions, knowledge?
thanks

A 92 should already have the needle style gauges and if so a 92-94 cluster is plug and play. If you have a 91 with the moonies and you want a 91 ss cluster then you just need to add the wire for the tach and your set. If you have a 88-91 with the moonies and you want the needle style 92-94 with tach you do need to wire in a drac and do some wiring.

That what I thought too. I have needle style gauges. Now all I have to do is find a SS cluster, which is the impossible part. Thank you for the response.

Plug it in and go on your way. I have a 93 SS's ( 92-93) cluster in my 94 and it works absolutely fine.

Thanks, that totally clears it up for me. I tried to see if the dealership would sell me one , even trying to swap out my current cluster so there is no appearance of odometer fraud but they still wouldnt sell me one. Part # 16140025 shows up in their systems.
If you ever want to see your cluster please let me know.

Mine is metric so you wouldn't want it, and they are a lot less common than the American version. I bought mine from some guy in San Antonio ( Mexican SS truck so hence KM/hr) but it didn't work because it was damaged by the post office. The needles and face were faded anyhow. I then did the dealership swap thing and got what is in essence a brand new cluster. I will never let it go, even if I sold the truck lol.
I had tried to buy one outright in the past and got the same response as you. If you are vigilant they come up on Craigslist and Ebay from time to time. It took me 10 years to get one and it's in a different truck than the original one I wanted it for.

Doing a quick search on gmpartsdirect.com, Part # 16140025 comes up as available, but you're gonna spend about $880. Just my $.02...

The dealership only sells them on an exchange basis...you cant buy a new one and have the mileage adjusted and slapped in. Would need even a non-working one before i could even spend the 800+ for a rebuilt one from a dealership. ah well. the wait/search begins....

in my searchs over the time lve been here have seen 2...one l bought...other was through a wrecker in states and it was around 750$ us....paid 450us for mine through a member here...lucked out...they are out there and little easyer to find with internet...my search now is for a police cluster that gos up to 130+..dought l'll find but lf l dont keep a eye out will never find
.....acttully just had a thought re that post and 454 exchanges...just thinking they may still have police cluster...am gona have to find a dealer and bribe him to see...want one baddddddd
swap..full day to do right...dont rush
dracs at wreckers for pocket change...this will enable you to calibrate tranny if you do tire or gear change easly
conectors from wreckers for pocket change
all info to do swap is here
one mod to do to cluster to make fit..matter of little cutting
swaping wires is just process of eleimination..triple checking and writeing down all wire swap is good idea..this way if you have issues you can check notes...highly adviseable to get it right first time....triple check!..
if l remember right at end will be 1-2 wires left with unmatching color codes..cant remember which but belive info is here as well..think l just connected what was left and looked for results.if it wasnt right just swap ed wires ect...
all in all a easy swap with some paitience

You sound like me with the clusters, and as I said the Mexican SS I got mine from actually was through this site, lol. Luckily Mexico is metric just like Canada ( same cluster in every way).
The police tahoe clusters are yeah.... impossible if you want a metric one. I have found one metric one..... but it was still in a running driving Tahoe owned by a fire department. I wrote it's VIN number down and was going to try the I own the truck and need a cluster to replace the original as it was stolen trick but I doubt that would work. I probably have a better chance of buying the whole truck, lol. Those 2wd Police units weren't particularily popular up here.......

Dealer exchange was only $425, not $800, lol. And my cluster cost less than $300 to buy so although still expensive I have more or less what is a brand new one. This was recent times for prices too as I bought the cluster in 2010. Just keep looking and you will find. You don't need to worry about the DRAC wiring and so forth as your truck is a 92 to begin with.

Will also look at my parts micro fiche that goes from 91-96. see if i cant see a part number for the police cluster in there. the three dealerships I spoke to gave me the same "exchange" line but wouldnt give up the name of the company that they do the swaps with. prob a very easy to contact them once a name is discovered. if you find out who the company is please let me know.

I will let you know if I can get the VIN still. I think it was just those oddball Police Package 2wd Tahoes that had the 130 mph cluster in them, but maybe I am wrong. I of course tossed out the VIN number after I had sold the truck the cluster was slated for, but that's not to say the fire department still doesn't have the truck. It was the Bonnyville Fire Department of all places that I found it. I can check the next time I am in town for fuel and just PM you the VIN if they still have the truck.
My hometown local police detachment used to have a 97 Chev truck they used but I honestly think it was just a normal truck. It had the el cheapo w/t grill in it, and was a Vortec 350 powered extended cab short box 2wd....... But I never did look inside it when they had it..... Or don't remember anymore either, lol. It had a light bar and so forth and was a marked cruiser so to speak.

You should have asked about the exchange thing, and honestly I feel bad I didn't post it already. As far as I know it's no secret of any kind, but maybe I am wrong. I just find it funny your dealer hasn't told you but this is the company that sells and does all of GM's exchanges. Anytime the dealers get a cluster this is who they go through. I asked my local GM guys for the hell of it years ago where they come from and they just told me, no issue.....

They are right in Calgary so close to us, well and Oshawa too. My SS cluster came from them and even in 2010 they still had one in stock so the police one may very well be the same thing.
And hey if you know a farmer whose John Deere combine, tractor or whatever has issues, they fix them too, lol.

Weird. My local dealer had no issues telling me where their clusters originate from. York does do conversions for US to Canada and vice versa so maybe they can help too. I really don't know though. Once again this is GM Canada's warranty place.
