I am getting sick of using the cassette adapter in my 1995 stock radio. The sound is sucky, the right side is almost inaudible. So, I went looking for a replacement.

I looked at the fancy double DIN units and decided I don't want to spend that much. While it's nice to have nav in the radio, I don't want to spend that much money and do that much work for something I will only use on the occasional road trip. So, single-DIN it is.

I noticed that there is a rash of CD-less radios that use SD cards and USB. I really like that idea. I haven't had a CD in the car for a few years and I don't want the added complexity. However, they all seem to be made by Chinese no-name manufacturers. That isn't a problem in itself, though. I would also like to get into HD radio. All of the one-piece HD receivers I see also have CD capabilities that I'd rather not have.

So, is there a single-DIN HD radio receiver without CD? Or am I stuck with using an add-on HD radio that I will have to figure out a place to mount?

That looks pretty nice. Only problem I'm seeing is that HD radio is a separate add-on unit that costs another $200 on top of the receiver. Bastards.

$550 for a stereo for a nothing-special OBS truck is a little out there... I just sold my other truck so I could fix this one up with the money.

There are plenty of single din headunits under 300 with built-in HD tuner. http://www.crutchfield.com/g_300/Car-Receivers.html?tp=5684&nvpair=AG_General_Features|FFHD_Radio_Tuner_Built% 40in&nvpair=AG_Size|FFSingle-DIN&pg=1

Also, how does having a cd player "add to complexity"? Granted, I don't play cds often either, but it is nice to have the option once in a while.

This one is similar to the one that's currently in my rig http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Alpine+-+50W+x+4+Apple%26%23174%3B+iPod%26%23174%3B-/HD+Radio-Ready+In-Dash+CD+Deck/4423562.p?id=1218477959629&skuId=4423562

Thanks, but every one of those has CD. I'd rather have SD cards.

It really isn't a big deal, it's just that it would mildly annoy me to buy a feature I will never use. A quirk of my brain, if you like. :)

To each his own I suppose. Good luck with the search. I may be in the market for a new HU myself, so if I find anything that meets your needs I'll post it up.

Pioneer is releasing some kick ass new units under 300 bucks that have USB, Bluetooth hands free, and audio streaming in addition to HD radio. I was looking at the new 9400BH myself. that gets you dual rear usb inputs, HD radio and Bluetooth. It's a great radio for around 230 bucks.

Or if you'd like to spend a little less the 8400 is very comparable but you lose the flip down face, and dual usb (you still have one, though).

Is flip-down face better for some reason?

Pioneer DEH-P5100UB is the greatest radio I have ever owned. It was CD/MP3/AM/FM/USB and was incredibly simple to use. It had a usb port that I would almost exclusively use with a flash drive plugged into it. HD radio may not even work because not a lot of radio stations have upgraded to it since Sirius/XM are so popular.

Usually a flip down face will give you a bigger screen, and larger buttons. I have big hands, so using a pass-through radio with tiny buttons doesn't work well most of the time.

Do you have an iPhone or iPod? If so, this would be perfect for you:

Also a good CD player. I sell those at my store fairly regularly, but most seem to prefer the DSXS300 because you have a front USB also. So for those wishing to connect a portable hard drive, or iphone, you can still have access to the device. But still have an ipod docked inside as well.

If you don't have your heart set on hd radio, take a look at the parrot asteriod. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-oghHk58YkKL/p_333ASTROID/Parrot-ASTEROID.html
