i have a 90 gmc rcsb, and i want to install a aftermarket stereo ...iwas told by a friend that the stock radio(even though its no longer hooked up has to stay in the dash)is this true,i had a 93 sub. and it had a cubby there done by previous owner, and is it hard to change this out ,being that it has the digital radio and eq/tape deck under the vents...i dont want to pay $200+ for installation if i can buy the install kit and do it myself(ive done plenty of radios before)any help would be appreciated thank you....Jim

They are availlible in different colors. I have never done a new stereo on the older style dash. I had to use a similar kit though with my 98 because gm uses a 1.5 din slot. The kit was not perfect and I had to custom fab it, but it looks clean now. The dash kit for the 88-94s looks more like a true fit though. Hope that helps.

I believe this is true. My dad installed an aftermarket stereo, in his '89, and he had to have it located in the middle of the dash and he had to leave the factory unit there. I think it has something to do with how wide the din is in the factory position. Very tacky, yes
