Hey guys,

so late last night I was on an airplane and got to thinking about fuel economy for my 96 454. With my 2011 silverado, there is the V4 fuel-saving setting, which has allowed my truck to average around 21 on the highway. Is there anyway to do a computer swap (maybe a 6.2 computer) to make it so my big block could have something like this? Has anyone else thought about this or is it just too much of a project to even attempt?

I think you need to read up on how "displacement on demand" or "active fuel managment" via cylinder deactivation works.

Long story short, no, you can't do it.

Aaand never mind. Just read up on GM's active fuel management. Thanks

Not only that, if you actually read up about....... You are better off not just disabling it, but completely deleting it from the engines altogether. Your '11 could get that mileage without that crap just as easily too, don't fall for it's joke of a marketing ploy.......

You can try this anytime with the '11 by setting the gear selector in "M" and just leaving top gear as 6th. It disables the AFM that way......

Thanks guys. I'm still relatively new to the NNBS scene and don't know nearly as much about them as I do with OBS's...

Its funny you mention this....My Hemi gets better mileage in fuel cut than it does with all 8 running. Thanks to a mild torque cam, SRT8 exhaust manifolds, and 4.56 gears. At 80 mph, I am at 2,500 rpm in 5th gear, the MDS enables and the torque converter unlocks, increasing me to 2,600ish rpm and my MPG hits 20-22 mpg depending on the day. One trip I averaged 76 mph for over 300 miles through the hills north west of San Antonio and Austin traffic, with speeds approaching 85 mph on the flat straightaways and still pulled down 19.8 mpg when I filled up. On a different trip, I set the cruise around 72 mph and pulled down 510 miles on 23.6 gallons (I have a 26 gallon tank). That is 21.61 mpg, I guess deactivation doesn't work. I have seen instant readings as high as 28 mpg at 50 mph around town. My in-town average driving with a 50 lbs right foot is about 17 mpg.

Not being fan of AFM you got me all giddy. I tried it that last night in my '11, driving at 70 mph with a tailwind the truck kept going to V4 back to V8. Every time it does that you can feel it kick in and out, after awhile it annoys me. Shifting to M6 had no effect, tried it in M6-T/H mode with no satisfaction.
