I'm looking for a 1973 454 belt diagram. No smog pump and no AC. Only 2 belts, one i know 1 goes around the crank, water pump and alt. The other, local shop says it just goes from the crank to the PS. But i think it should be longer and run from the crank, water pump and PS. Wonder who is right? A single belt on the water pump seems like it would slip. But I'm just a back yard mechanic.

Most likely just the crank and p/s

Yep more than likely just around the crank and p/s pump. Mine was originally like that, but I swapped a double pulley on to the water pump so I could run a longer belt that went around the Crank, water pump and P/S, that way if I lost the Crank/Alt/Water pump belt for whatever reason (It's happened) I would still have a belt to run the water pump.

Exactly my thinking, my water pump is already a double pulley. But the path from the water pump pulley to the crank seams pretty tight - the water pump housing might be restricting. We'll see. Do you by chance remember how long that belt is? Dayco part number?

How would you tighten the belt if it was only going to the crank and ps? Just thinking out loud.
OK, here is what I have in my 80 GMC. The truck has a 72 402 in it, but I have been buying parts and belts for a 454, my engine has a two groove w/p pulley and the PS belt goes around the w/p as well as the crank and p/s pump. Hope this helps.

The ps pump bracket is sloted. just tighten it up.

I believe it was a 45" belt.

Oh alright. I remember the alternator but not the ps. Thanks
