Hey fellas, I am looking at getting a '07-'10 5.3 1500 w/ AFM and wanted to hear about your guys' experience as far as mileage with performance chips and what kind of increase you have seen. I have been looking at the Edge Evolution system which includes an economy setting. A few of the customer testimonials on the Edge website state they are gettin 25-30 mpg with the chip and GM's AFM. Any thoughts? Any other chips to be looking at?

New vehicles don't have a PROM that you plug in anymore, so they don't get "chipped." You can get a handheld programmer like a Hypertech and those are okay, but the best bet is a custom tune from a place like Blackbear Performance. 25 - 30mpg won't happen. Certainly not with an out of the box tuner like an Edge. I'm sure you could get north of 20 on the highway with a lean cruise, but 25 - 30 won't happen.

GM would have bought any voodoo that can squeeze 25-30mpg out of a 5.3L in an FSC, as the 1500 series trucks count to their total fleet mpg criteria.

Stock, I've knocked out 22mpg all highway (best ever, avg about 18-19mpg mixed), but that is an ECSB Z71 L33(no afm). I'm not expecting more than 5-8% max gain in economy with a tune. To go from 20mpg to 30mpg would be a 50% mpg gain, even from 20mpg to 25mpg would be a 25% gain, which is massive.

I'm not discounting or disbelieving your mpg, it's really impressive. You aren't really attributing that number 100% to the programmer though, are you? What was it's mpg before the programmer, but lowered?

I had the programer way before it was lowered. Im not trying to argue but alot of people on this forum give these tuners a bad rap when really IMO they do what they say. Before I got my CTS I was going to go with a custom tune but the biggest deciding factor for me was I didnt want to have to pay for 91 octane all the time when I didnt need it
