i have a 2001 gmc seirra 5.3. it has a black bear tune, long tubes, offroad catless y pipe, cat back, s&b intake, and factory 3.73s. the truck has 78,000 miles on it and its basicly a toy. i never drive it cept on nice days, or to compete in meca, or to haul my s10 to car shows. im thinking about finally camming it b/c im almost out of normal bolt ons and im not wanting electric fans. what cam would you guys say would be good for the truck with a trailblazer torque converter and without a trailblazer torque converter. i figured id need cam and springs but what else would i need? seen a few people just swapping cam and springs but i figured it needed atleast lifters but maybe im wrong. thanks
this is the truck its going in

I wouldn't go too extreme if you plan on towing, maybe something starting no higher than 1,500-1,800, and add a stall to compliment the cam. I don't have any specific cam recommendations because I haven't gotten into the LS world yet.

212/218 xr265 lowlift will work good with converter or no converter.

kemble thats the 2nd cam i had in mind. i have access to a trailblazer converter at work but not the know how to put it in. i may just have my work (gm dealership) throw my cam water pump springs and tq converter in for me. i just want something that sounds decent and gives me a lil power back.

If you tow with it I wouldnt put a cam in it personally. If you do keep it small like what Kemble recommended.

Personally I would cam it, ESPECIALLY IF HE TOWS. If you are towing any weight at all, you should be in 3rd gear and that puts you at 2,500+ RPM @ 60. Plenty of cams can give great gains in torque from 2,000+ RPM. I looked at the 212/218 mentioned and it is very similar to the 212/212 that is in my Hemi.

That's the .050 of what I have in my 383 and it's great for a daily driver... smooth idle, etc., it will probably be similar in yours.

The ls6 cam with a tb stall is also a very nice upgrade, mild cam that makes great power, my cousins 5.3 with a ls6 cam and shaved heads made 323 at the wheels and he ran 14.2 in the 1/4 with cam/shaved heads only, add that converter and u could run mid to high 13s unloaded, and have nice towing power when u need it

What kind of shaved heads? The numbers you posted are very generous from the dyno to say the least. Plus the Ls6 camshaft is proven to lose low end torque, just what you need when moving 2 1/2 tons of truck.
