I have a '97 gmc k2500 with 454 vortec. I started the truck with the remote start(viper smart start), it started fine and I then shut it off after a couple minutes again with the remote start. Approximately 10 minutes later I tried to start the truck with the key and got nothing, if I turn the key all I hear is what sounds like a relay clicking, on the drivers side under the hood. I checked every fuse, including three that go to the remote start, all cables to both batteries and the starter. I also put a trickle charger to both batteries and once they were charged tried it again with the same results, using the remote and the key. All lights come on inside and outside of the truck.

Anyone have any ideas? And does anyone know about the viper smart start, is it possible there is something with it that could cause no start?

Sounds like a bad connection to me, even though you said you checked them.

Definitely a possibility I missed some, any suggestions on where to look? Thank-you

I checked all the connections that I could think of/find. I notice when I turn the key to the position, just before it cranks, that the voltmeter is at about 6 even though both batteries are fully charged, which does make me think it's aconnection but I just can't find it.

Did you verify they were fully charged with a voltmeter? How about fusible links?

Fusible links seem to be intact. Just checked voltage on both batteries, 12.9 & 12.5. Also checked cable going to starter and also reads 12.9. I also checked the smaller wire, I'm assuming it's the signal wire from the ignition switch, going to the starter and when the key was turned it was showing 10.5 and I could feel it click once but nothing else. So I'm guessing it may be the starter went out? Does anyone think that sounds right?

Sounds possible... can't hurt to get t checked at Autozone, etc.

Checked the starter, it works just fine. Again went though and checked all wires and fuses and all check out. The guy at auto zone suggested ignition control module? I dunno, getting frustrated.

Ended up being the starter after all
