im putting long tubes on my 02 silverado 1500 5.3L and then getting it tuned i was wondering if anyone could give me pros and cons to deleting the egr? will it give me any more power or what?
not really concerned about mileage as i drive about 5 miles a day

No pros, cons would be possible drop in gas mileage and less resistance to detonation at cruise speeds (moreso on the highway), and a check engine light.

You can delete the egr with the tune. Egr has zero benefits from my experience, I saw no loss in mpg when deleting it on my old hoe, and neither did my cousin and his 3 friends with nbs trucks, pros are a much cleaner intake internally and less crap under the hood, looks better and stays cleaner

if you read my post you would know that im getting it tuned and dont care about mileage lol if i cared about mpg id drive a car
but didnt know about the detonation thanks for that

Also, tune it for 91/93 octane and u shouldnt have to worry about detonation, it'll run like a scalded dog

You asked for pros/cons so I simply gave them.
EGR allows more advance because of the added detonation resistance.

so does 93 octane.

And if the engine is only tuned to run 87, 93 is pointless.

who said anything about tuning for 87?

who said anything about tuning for 93 either 93 is like 4.80$ here no thanks lol rather keep the egr and pay 3.80

Octane never came up until you mentioned it, I was simply stating the function of EGR.

No joke, 87 is about $3.70 here. I don't know if the newer trucks are programmed similar, but the EBL has an added spark advance function for when EGR is active, and even without it you probably wouldn't have any knock unless it was a real hot day anyway.

ive heard some people having problems with pinging with egr deleted and tuning for 87 octane...for the added performance gain, smoother running, and considering the fact tbat you wil get better mpg with the tune so it will pay for itself eventually, ill take 93...tuning for 87 octane is like painting the back of your headlights, its pointless IMO...but then again the price difference here is maybe 30 cents(multiply that by 25~ gallons and u have a whopping $7.50 extra at the pump

Really? post number 5 someone stated octane buddy. and second of all lets do some math... you say 480? im gonna go by my gas prices because i know its right as u filled up today at 418 for premium. okay so 28 gallons at 4.19, yes i said 4.19 because fuel is 4.189.. anyways, it was a total of 117.45 dollars or so. 87 here is 3.85 or so 3.86 x 28 is 109ish. im sorry but saving 8 dollars for filling up, and running better fuel, with less chances of detonation, better fuel mileage then 87, yeah ill stick with premium tunes. BTW 93 burns cooler the 87, don't believe me, search it up.

It burns cooler because it burns slower. Thanks for the math lesson too 'buddy', we all needed it.

obviously you did because you were bitching about 8 dollars lol

Not really, you just took it that way. Regardless I'm done arguing Mr. Math Whiz.

by the way do you know what happens when you have cooler burning fuel? gas mileage. so spending 8 bucks more your gonna be getting better fuel mileage.

Ok...
EGR allows e.xhaust g.as to r.ecirculate through the engine via the intake manifold. These gasses are inert, meaning they aren't combustible. The combination of gasoline, exhaust hasses, and accelerants in the air enter the cylinder. Since there is now inert gas in the cylinder, the compressed mixture burns slower, causing more detonation resistance.
"Cooler" burn = less cylinder pressure = less power = lower gas mileage. Look at E85, it burns slower/cooler and mileage isn't near as good as lower ethanol gasolines.
Happy?
P.S. My tidbits are done.

just gonna leave this here.... E85 can make more power then Gasoline...

Also btw, whens the last time you ran 93 instead of 87 and actually tried to get good mpg?

For crying out loud let it die... I didn't say a word about power. My reasoning stands on 87 vs 93, most cars are built for 87... the only advantage to 93 would be a little more timing and a minimal mpg gain.
